I have a 1991 t/t jap import which has a beeping chime every time you put it in reverse. Fine for a few rides, but now I'm tired of sounding like some artic!

Anyone any idea where the speaker for this is, or if there is anywhere "on route" I can cut the cables?

Any help appreciated,

Simon

oh my... datz rilly irritating.. sounds like my company's toyota liteace cargo van...

There's a write-up on disconnecting it on twinturbo.net I think. Not a hard job - just involves cutting a wire in the dash.

Do a search, it's been asked a few times

Must get round to doing mine...

I Wouldn't Disconnect it,

Just Imagine the mess you would make (If something was behind you), If you put it in reverse and you thought it was in drive and then you booted it.

That annoying beep would be music to your ears after that.

I want to disconnect it so I can hear my reversing aid!!!

I've found, thanks to previous threads, how to disconnect the speed chime, but the reversing one drowns everything out.

I'm pretty certain it's the same little black box above the speedo that makes all the chiming noise (speed, reversing, keys in ignition with door open and lights on with door open), so you can just unplug it if it bothers you that much. My speed chime is history but I can tolerate the others - maybe I don't go backwards that often !

According to the Australian site, the reversing chime isn't made by the same box in the dash as the other chimes.

Hmmm, really ? Sounds like it is .... ... guess we'll soon find out .... ;)

Not to me it doesn't! :D

Absolutely. I hope it is just that as it's been annoying me for 4 1/2 years now! On the other hand, it's stopped me reversing into things at least twice! :D

Unfortunately Andy, you're wrong. I'm going to try and put the rest of my dash back together now. Still can't find the blessed speaker. Ripped out most of the drivers footwell side, but just can't isolate the right part.

Anyone else any ideas before I put it all back?

Does the sound definitely come from inside the car? I assumed the chime unit was attached to the gearbox, but I've never checked.

Bummer !

At least you shouldn't have had to take much apart to get to the little blck box, it's only the two screws that hold the cover over the speedo/tacho etc ....

Gonna have a look at mine now ....

The speed/light chime is easy, it's that other bugger that hides just out of reach!!!!

OK, found the little sucker. It's the grey box in the middle of this picture and to put it into context that's the clutch pedal in front of it.

Thanks for the pic Andy, but I have not got the gizmo where you have. In fact I still can't locate it. I'm going to call it a day for now. I don't know if the fact that mine is an auto and an import has any bearing, but I've had enough for now. I'm not aesthetically built for grovelling around in a footwell. A bit like the 300zx, low and wide!!

I'll try again tomorrow,

Simon.

Well mine is also an import and it was an auto ! However, the fact that the unit appears to be held in place by cable ties rather than the plastic socket thing that would locate onto a metal tab may be significant. Perhaps it's supposed to be higher up inside the dash ???? Well at least you know what to look for ...

thats the one, the one on ours fell off its mounting and dangles in the foot well on its wires :(
