Is optimax better than regular unleaded when used in the z? I have been told that it is better if you are running at higher boost levels (stops pinking) . I dont mind spending the extra if it will benefit the car.

Any ideas?

Ste.

No worries thought you may have known or had some info :) as I said, i use optimax anyways...it was just something Id heard :)

ATEOTDay ?

At The End Of The Day ;)

i have just chipped my zed and raised boost and have been running on 95 for over a year..i do notice especialy when hot i still get det at high boost sometimes depending where i get my fuel .

will using optimax or super really eliminate detonation???it works out alot more per tank!!

Your going to end up spending alot more on an engine rebuild lol, than many tanks of fuel.

LOL, i thought it was trackday/drag meeting like TOTB only longer

Higher Octane or Engine? hmmmmm let me think!!!

Seriously though, if it detonates under those conditions and it has been mapped for 95 then either the map is over cooked or you are running more boost than it was designed to deal with. Alternatively you may have another problem elsewhere in the engine (carbon, plugs, cooling, fuel delivery etc).

Or its a supershits!!!!!!!!!!

try it yo poof !!:D

only a joke

mine dets at partial boost over 3000 rpm sometimes not all the time and some times only at full boost but not all the time and only dets at gears 3 and above could it be timing or something else??

Andy, it could be your timing.

Have you done any boost mods as well as your chip? What Chip is it?

Detonation is most likely to occure under heavy engine load conditions ie high gear and WOT so what you have is not supprising.

You can either retard the timing, reduce the boost, install larger intercoolers or use beter fuel. Either or a combination of the should sort out your problem. DO NOT DO NOTHING, you WILL destroy your engine sooner or later.

i know that cheers i am a mechanic but have never worked on zeds we just do fords and vauxhauls...and most of them get detonation through dodgy crank sensors or need a decoke or timing on old cars....i thought these zed were supposed to automaticley avance and retard on detonation but apparently they do not detect detonation above 3000rpm which does not help....

i am running a jwt larger intercoolers and 1 bar of boost not too much id imagine and a have a new tim boost gauge...

The ECU in the Z can only retard the timing by a few degrees when knock is detected (and yes I belive can only detect knock below 3K but few can above that unless they have very clever filtering and processing). The ECU cannot advance the timing at all above the base map values. If the few degrees available is not enough to stop detonation then the ECU triggers the dreaded safety boost and reverts to a safer map. If you run a boost controller then the safety boost will never happen because you would have bypassed the stock valves therefor allowing the detonation to continue. However because you are running 1 bar boost you are running on the very limit of the stock injectors. 1 Bar boost is a lot in Z land. I would suggest you knock back the boost a touch for safety sake or upgrade the injectors and remap the ECU (excuse the pun). If the timing is stock then do not touch it or you will ruin the off boost power.

Remember that Alluminium melts very easily!!!

Hope this helps.

Did anyone ever get back to you on an address for the SE CHip upgrade? I want to know more !!

Well back to Optimax - I must say that the engine on mine (Jap imp. TT) definitely sounds better on the Opti!

I always use it.

Well, I have been using Optimax for a few days now and thought i'd let you know how I got on. I can tell you that I have noticed a definate reduction in power as apposed to reg unleaded. Don't know why this is. I have read in these forums that the ECU has to "adjust" to the new fuel, any ideas?

As far as I know the ECU has no way of adapting to different fuels automatically. Not sure why power would be reduced.

If anyone has info to the contrary then please post!!!

Come on 51X you know about these ECU's.

Paul (SParkZ)

I run a N/A import Zd, when I use optimax I generally get between 10 and 30 miles more from a tank full on urband driving.

This more than pays for the extra cost per litre.

I've also noticed that the engine runs smoother and the pick up is better.

LOCKY

has anyone tried using 1 carton of ambrosia custard to a full tank of fuel?? there was an article on this reducing detonation in the combustion chamber a while back - i'll try to find it

Ha ha ha!!!

I have heard that F1 engines now have Lemonade injection to prevent detonation. Only works with R Whites though!!!

Paul (SparkZ)

I think it was condensed milk.

No, was definately R whites!!!
