Hi,

I am looking for a first 300zx, not modded or anything- as I have never had one before.

Is there anyone that knows of the best service that can check out a car like this before purchase. I have not got fantastic car knowledge and need some help choosing one that is not duff.

Is there anyone here that would look one over for a fee, in the Midlands?

I hope I havn't got too many backs up. Going to tell me to go buy a micra? Anyway, hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Hello Rich,

I personally think it's a good idea if you can buy one that a member is selling. You can do a search and see what problems they've had with the car and I assume you'd have a better chance of not getting stiched up.

Good luck.

If you are looking anywhere near me - I would gladly help

you check over the car - I should know most of the things

to look at - just make sure it`s a manual box - that should provoke the auto boys

:)

Birmingham,

thanks for replying. I am looking for something, not for 'everyday' driving, but not showroom, I want it to be a car I actually use, not just keep in the garage.

Rich

Isnt Jeff TT that part of the country?

To be truthful a good place to start looking is on this forum see of people are selling cars here. That way you know that the last owner is an enthusiast, and you can also search about how the car has been going, as most of the people post up any problems they have had.

Rich,

I'm in Birmingham, where abouts are you and give us a shout and I'll give you a hand looking, no probs.

Matty.

Again- thank you.

Cheers for the great responses. I am in Leamington Spa, but up in Birmingham every day for work. Thanks Matty I would like to take you up on that offer. I have got a few questions, but I'll take a look through the forum before I start bugging people.

I think it's probably best to start with this forum if anyone is selling, then I'll know someone is committed to the car. I had a look round some dealers and I don't really know what to make of it. There was a lot of teeth sucking. Don't get me wrong, the guys were not probably saying anything pure cobblers. One guy said they steered away from 300zxs because 'they had a lot of mechanical problems'. One question I do have is, if I go for, say a 1992 or 3, with over 70000 miles is it LIKELY that the turbo will need replacing? Does it just depend on the car and how it's been driven?

I will have more of a browse through the messages here. Seems to be a great resource.

Rich

iv got a 93 with now over 90k miles on the standard tubs, no probs as yet. they could last another 90k miles, or they could go next week - who knows??

but if you look after them,(& the previous owners have too) then you stand more of a chance.

mines had an oil service every 3000 miles from new, hopefully they'll last a while longer

but if not - Hybrid time!! ;) :D

Hi Rich - I work in Leamington during the week :)

If you are in during the week and you want a tour of mine, and a trip out, give me a shout.

Pete

u want an auto or manual ?

try AA car inspection

I had thought about getting the AA to look over a car, but thought maybe people on the forum would actually be a better bet, as you know the cars well.

Thanks to Matty and Pete who are close by and have offered to give me a few hints. For someone like me, who does not have enough technical knowledge, it is a godsend to have somone who you trust there with you. My brother-in-law up in Scotland (trained ford) has helped me out when buying in the past, and even when he said, yeah, it's an OK motor- nothing seems to be going wrong it just put my mind at rest. Stuff still goes wrong AFTER you've bought, but at least I knew I wasn't being palmed off with a grease-stuffed gear box or whatever.

As soon as I have collected together enough cash in my hand, I will try and buy from someone who loves 300zx's and I know has taken care of it.

What are people's thoughts on Auto/manual, or is it just what you like. There seems to be more autos about. Personally I would prefer a manual, I kind of thought it would be more responsive and you would be more in control. But maybe I am talking B.S. I like doing everything, if you know what I mean- making the decision when to change gear seems kind of a basic thing you just DO when you drive. Is this bad heresay? I thought maybe driving an auto is too much like playing ridge racer. But before you all jump for my throat, I havn't actually ever driven an auto so I admit I don't know what I am on about there!!

Cheers,

And what do the AA or RAC know about cars???

Just do plenty of research , talk to people on this forum

and ask nicely if you can drive a good one and you`ll

soon get an idea what you are looking at.

When I asked about it they said they do a £99 one which is fine for a Escort or Focus, but for mine you need a specialist person and would cost £399 to get it inspected.

I was on a tight budget and wasnt prepaired to spend nearly 10% the cost of the car on an inspection.

Rich,

My Z is an auto, my last one was an auto.........I wouldn't mind a manual but I do like auto's (lazy mans car!!)

It's very quick and is as smooth as silk through the gears.....

No clutch to dip, no lever to shift...........

Just keep your finger up your nose while you dust people from the lights.......LMAO

:D

Did you get the mail I sent you???

Matty.

EEEHHHHHHHH! I b ought mine from an AA inspection which cost £150. The 1st one they looked at, they didn't complete as the car ws trouble and they refunded half the cost of the inspection.

Where did £399 come from ? Dioes that involve removing the engine ??:D :D

I dont know. It was an RAC inspection. I asked and they said for a car like that they need a more intensive one which would take about 6 hours and cost £399

sounds like they was trying to steer you into the OTT one on the strength of it being a performance car.

Hi Rich, wellcome to the mad house, another good idea would be to get along to one of the meets in the midlands area, theres one this weekend at Thorseby Hall, and the big one at Billing Aquadrome 26-27 july, then you could meet up and fire away with your questions, look around a few Zs,even go for a spin,i,m sure theres a few including myself who would not mind,,you would certainly get a good feel for what to look for etc,;)
