Just failed the MOT for excessive play in the rear lower ball joints .

Does anyone know if this is an expensive job? daft Q really!

Or is it possible to DIY it.

Didn't I read somewhere about a Nissan bulletin which asks testers to allow for additional play in the rear because of the HICAS system? Don't know a) if that's true or b) if it's relevant to you, but might be worth a little digging about before you open your wallet.

Someone with a better memory might be able to help some more!

Russ.

That's for the top link on the front suspension, not the rear ball joint. Doesn't mean that there isn't one for the rear though, just not on my site.

IIRC it's on Andy's site somewhere http://www.300zx.org.uk

I've just had my MOT test yesterday. The car's rear wheels had a little bit of play. I told them that it had rear wheel steering and as they tested the other side concluded that as the play was equal on both sides it must be due to HICAS and was exceptable. Passed MOT.

Play was approx. 5 mil at perimeter. Hope this helps.

Good luck

Ha! I forgot about this - I printed it off your site Andy, when Nissan failed my MOT on the top front susp link.

I showed it to the service manager and he said "Uhhh, we haven't got a spring gauge..." :D

In my case the link really was shot though and i needed a new one.

Hi all,

Pleased to say thay after my earlier post I went to a different MOT station who knew Z's a little. They felt the play was 'slight' and passed it. Oh happy day. Because the Nelson quote to replace the rear links containing the rear ball joints as £750.
