As previously warned, I've now got two questions about pulleys - which ones should be changed when doing the second timing belt change (i.e. it had one 45,000 miles ago and is now due for another one at 90,000 miles).

To start, here's the diag

130B01LHpulleys.gif

The 3 pulleys are marked yellow and the numbers are marked with red.

13077 + B is included in the kit and some people recommend replacing the other 2 as well particularly if the car is over 10 yrs old.

The 2nd Q is can anyone help me sort out the numbers and prices?

As you can see from this list, the prices are all fubared.

pulleylist.gif

The centre top one is OK

But the 13070M assembly is $120 or so vs a UK list of £232. Usual rule of thumb is price in dollars = price in squids. This is twice that.

And the passenger side (UK) idler pulley is $170 or so in US but only £40 or so in UK.

Shurley shome mishtake?

Can anyone shed any light on which ones should be changed and which of the parts/prices I found are right?

Thanks in advance - Gio

Hi Gio,

I can't answer all your questions there without spending age looking through all of my receipts, BUT....

I bought from Courtesy Parts last year, both new idler pulleys and a new tensioner assembly.

One of the idlers was *loads* more than the others, and the tensioner was i guess about £200

Problem is, I've got loads of receipts in a big heap. If I get a chance to look through them I'll let you know what I paid.

IMO its best to change em all while you've got the belt off / engine out, since all of my idlers had a small amount of play in them, which would only get worse since they're 11 years old. My arguement is: its cheaper to change em NOW for £xxx, rather than paying £2K for a complete engine build plus new valves n' stuff if an idler destroys itself!

Mike why are you changing the cam belt at 45000 miles, when it is 60,000 mile replacement interval?

Dont know if this helps, I bought a 60k service pack from courtesy last week

All belts

intake sprocket springs and seals

Water pump

Tensioner

Back washer for crank

2 water hoses from top rad pipe to head

thermostat

5 oil seals

water pump gasket

$364.84 exc shipping and import tax.

I phoned the guy and asked if there was anything else he recommended and he said that unless I had a problem with something, no.

Thanks, gents

Mark: the timing belt was replaced at 71,300km which is 44,000 miles (the first job I had done on import just-in-case).

More details here: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18065&highlight=timing

I got info from the estimable Mike Feeney that

As noted in my reply, Nissan revised the cam belt service interval (probably due to excessive warranty claims) from the 60,000 miles that may still be in print in some service documents, to the now generally accepted 50,000 miles.

Which means I need to replace before 44k + 50k = 94k miles. I'm at 147,000km = 91.3k miles so I need to do something within the next 2,700 miles. Makes sense to you?

Simon: yes I agree replacing them all while the timing belt is being done is a good idea. But the price differences I found are so barking mad that I am not yet convinced they are the same parts. eg is Nissan UK really cheaper than the US on 13077 + A? And did you say that you had play in all three pulleys?

Jock: yes, that's the kit I am investigating (well from ConceptZ or UK but the kit's the same - at least mostly). But there are at least two parts called "tensioner" and it isn't clear which is which.

Some advice says only replace what you need and others say get everything done while you're there. Hence the questions! :D

Cheers - Gio

Hi Gio,

You live and learn!

By the way, there have been a load of reports of bad shipping and incorrect deliveries from courtesey, some of which were several of my deliveries!

Coz at CZP is meant to be the fella to get Nissan stuff from now including the elusive PFR6B-11B plugs!!!!!!!!!

The only other thing to replace is the main pulley to one of the Fischer Lightened Pulleys which you might catch the tail end of the group buy!!!!!! Torsionally dampened as well!!!!!

Can we tempt you away from stock,, OOOOOOHHFFF suits you sir!!!!!!!!!!;)

I am changing mine now,It has only covered 35k it was last changed in 99.

Gio,

FWIW, having striped all mine off, the only thing I would say is that off the three IDLER pulleys, the one top centre and the one RHS (facing the engine) are true idler pulleys, the one LHS is a tensioner,(or mounted onto the tensioner) and is the only one with any adjustment.
