after driving sometimes, I get out to close my door and get a small electric shock from the car, not painful just damn annoying, how do I fix it without putting one of those static straps to the ground?

Featured Replies

If you dont like the style of those strips you can enhance them by adding little red lights like I had on my Cortina many years ago.

Paul

thats you not the car, man soon you are going to be walking down the road and burst into flames lol

Wear different shoes. I get the same but only when wearing trainers.

This might sound stupid but...

Close the door with the glass smile.gif

I've kinda learnt to do that now with whatever car I'm getting out of..

Just a thought, but do the people who suffer from this have cloth or leather seats? Because if this problem exists with the leather then I'd guess that it's a combination of floor mats & shoes that cause it. Either wool or nylon mats are likely to cause static with the friction of your shoes.

The cloth seat covers will also build it up as you slide across the seat in getting out. The trick is probably to hold on to something metal as you get out.

A few years ago I had a cheap'n'nasty Ford as a company car and at the time they had nylon cloth seats. The shocks off that b*st*rd were so bad that nobody would touch any metal when getting out and would then kick the doors closed !

I have leather, and the mats are good quailty Z ones. I get shocks getting into the car as well though.

Stuart

The shock you are getting is caused by the build up of static charge on the body of the car - it happens most in a warm, humid atmosphere. The only way to avoid this is to not drive the car!!! smile.gif As the air passes over the car a charge builds up similar to if you rub a balloon on a wooly jumper. When you get out, the car discharges through you!

Funny you should meantion this because i have never experienced this until today when i only drove the car down the drive (about 10m), got out and got zapped. Pretty wicked shock.

I'm happy to say that my Z is one of the only cars I've owned never to give me any trouble with this. I can touch any part of the bodywork at any time..... and nothing. The worst car I ever had for giving shocks was a rover metro.

Useless bit of info for you all there. biggrin.gif

Women suffer from this more than men.

As yet unexplained by science. (fact)

Could be due to the thong resister! ;-)

You think this is a problem on a car, you want to try a helicopter!!(Personally I don't own one - still collecting the tokens)

The build up of static charge has nowhere to go at all and the blades spinning through the air create a huge charge.

If you ever see a 'military' movie with heli's in you'll see a guy touch the winch rope with a hook that has a wire trailing to ground before he attaches the underslung cargo.

There's a good reason for it - I once saw a guy on top of a landrover grab hold of the winch hook of a Chinook, without grounding it first, it knocked him clean off the top. He said he felt like he'd spent 10hrs in the gym afterwards his muscles ached that much.

With me it depends on which shirt I wear. One good way to reduce to intensity is to make sure you don't slide out of the car.

When ever I rent a car in the states it is so much worse. Not a tingling in the fingers but bad enough to make my whole arm convulse. One of the cars had a coded ignition key with a micro chip. It had a seperate key with no chip for the door lock. I wandered why at first ......ZAP. Case solved!

If you get into the habit of closing the door by the glass you are just delaying the pain. Try touching someone on the nose!

Phil.

Don't buy ugly earthing strips, just remove one tyre and voila, problem solved!

Straight from the pages of Viz that one...

Here's another cracker:

Don't waste money on expensive binoculars, just walk closer to the object you are viewing.

LOL
