My Mum-in-Law is with us after tripping, falling face down and breaking both of her wrists.

Just a month ago she slipped backwards, fell on her arse and crushed a vertebrae!

Basically its osteoporosis big time. BUT my Mum has fallen over as well and apart from the same sort of brusing is OK. Why?

Well it turns out that my Mum has been taking Calcium suppliment for at least 50 years – but my Mum-in-Law has not, (despite being told 20 years ago that it was necessary after falling down stairs and breaking one wrist).

Please please please could all you female zeders start or continue to take Calcium supplements. I know that my tale is anechdotal – not statiscally significant - maybe non-representative BUT you really do not want to get into the position my Mum-in-Law is in. For the next 4 weeks she cannot do anything for herself – and I mean anything. Feeding her is fine, holding her drink is fine but you can only imagine her embarrisment every time she has to visit the loo. Otherwise she is in good shape – no marbles lost.

Fortunately we can share this task with my sister-in-law who lives quite close so we should count our blessings – my wife has been popping Calcium for some time now which is good since it needs to be taken early to be effective. I am no expert so look at http://www.nof.org/prevention/ for better info.

I am sure that when I was at school the girls where watched a video about girl things (Oo err) and they where also told that they should drink a pint of milk a day. Either normal, semi skimmed or skimmed as they all have about the same amount of calcium in.

When we where in an accident years ago and my mum was in a bad way, she was told to drink a pint of gold top a day which is normal milk with all the fat from semi skimmed and skimmed milk put in I think. Its got loads of calcium in.

Unfortunalty drinking milk straight seems to have a macho image that only men do it. I love milk. Best drink out there.

Stuart

It is possible to get a test for osteoporosis , they do a sort of scan of the heel bone and it reports bone density I think. Incidentally, it's not just swilling calcium that helps, you can eat TUMS and more importantly you can take exercise as the impact makes the bone stengthen itself. There are also loads of products on the market to address this problem and a new one heading your way soon (from your friendly pharmaceutical giant) will be called Ibandronate.

Unfortunately it's the calcium taken in during the early years that counts more than that taken in later life.

However, there's nothing wrong with taking an additional supplement, it's true. :)

Wise words. :)

Hope your mum-in-law recovers soon, she must be in a lot of pain.... :(

Stuart, when I see you at one of the meets, I'll take you to the pub and introduce you to a few other 'best drinks'!!!:D :D ;)

That was an aside but I couldn't resist it!!

Zimon, I hope your mum-in-law has a speedy recovery.:)

Cheers,

F.T.

Zimon, I would like thank you for expressing these wise words.

I will make sure that the Mrs reads this thread and help her in taking her daily dose. :D

I really really wanna say something but I won't.... :D Can I use this thread to 'improve' my girlfriends 'technique'??? :D:D:D Shit I just said it :D

That 'bone' doesn't have any calcium in it ! lol ;)

Yep you are right Mum-in-Law is to have one this week but in her case the test is a bit like shutting the door after the horse, (Calcium), has bolted!

Many thanks for the words of support Ajay, Fat Tony and the rest.

For the first week she just sat in a chair and did nothing - which was very unlike her - then there was the operation to screw what little bone was there, together again.

But things are improving - I know that she is healing as she has started to giving the snooker players advice! She loves watching it so the world championchips are a God send.

The real shame is that in the most part this can be prevented if action is taken early on, hence my plea.

Thanks for you kind words again

I have decided not to share you comment with me Mum-in-Law but I appriciate the need to see the funny side.

In fact to her credit the first think Mum-in-law said to me was that she could not help chuckling about the mobile phone I had just bought her. After the last fall, I was so worried that I forced her into carring a mobile phone for her to use in case of accidents - well the first time it was needed it was useless - as she said "try using a mobile phone with two broken arms!!" :-)

LOL!

Sorry Zimon I did mean to wish your mum in law a speedy recovery too but the mischief got me all carried away...

Drink the white stuff girls - you know you like it...... Oh b0ll0x I just did it again :D:D:D

CheerZ,

Andy

oh COME on guys!! :D

I've always drunk a fair bit of milk - that coupled with weight training should hopefully give me strong bones :)

Semi-skimmed milk has very little fat in it considering the nutrition it contains. Milk can = a meal substitute at times. So girls - drink your milk !;)

I believe it's the impacts rather then the exercise as such that strengthens the bones, can't remember why now, maybe I should pay more attention to the scientist types !

And in most diets milk is considered a food, rather than a drink.

yup, impact exercise compresses the bone.

also - as you put on weight, your bones thicken slowly. When you lose weight, they slowly lose weight, but in the meantime, I guess they will be that bit strogner because they r thicker. Make sense ? Also, if they are losing weight then they are less likely to suffer a deficiency of Calcium, as there will be a surplus.

Calcium has an atomic mass of 40.08. If I removed all the calcium from my bones and replaced it with hydrogen (atomic mass 1.008), would I be able to run faster?! Also, should I do it naked?

Guys, sorry to poo poo the milk enthusiasm, but any nutritionalist will (or should!) tell you that the fats in milk have a high hyperglycemic quality that means they convert straight to sugars in the blood stream. So what I hear you say - so that's what makes people fat is what.

Carrots, patatoes and bread all have the same characteristic and many of the low carbohydrate diets that are popular these days share the same message - cut out the items I've listed.

So if your girlies are taking a pint of milk to keep their bones in good shape, wait for the weight !

PS, there are other contributing factors to osteoporosis and calcium supplements aren't the only issue.

You mean the Atkins diet ? - no diet is proven and there is some evidence saying that the Atkins diet is not good for you !

Fat gets you fatter quicker than carbohydrate.

Milk IS good for you - it is after all good enough for babies ! Sure it's rich and should be taken in moderation (like most things).

No idea about the diet, jeez never had that problem.... even after 2 kids

I don't drink moo milk as it tastes crap i drink soya wif calcium

Baby milk is fortified with loads stuff, though no where near as good as breast milk for babies

If you exercise (me astanga yoga & pilates) it helps

Different people need different food ..... different metabolic types, cultures and tastes

that why we are all so different, y think any truth in " you are what u eat"

Not too sure what you mean by that, but it doesn't sound right to me. There are more calories in a gram of fat than in a gram of carbohydrate.

However, my understanding is that the carbs are easier for the body to store as fat, than dietary fat is.

All I know is fat is harder to metabolise than carbs, so I'd rather nosh a load of carbs than fat. The excess carbs may reduce my fat consumption, hence causing me to put on weight, but I wudda thought that would be better than eating fat, which can easily be turned into body fat.
