My Mum-in-Law is with us after tripping, falling face down and breaking both of her wrists.
Just a month ago she slipped backwards, fell on her arse and crushed a vertebrae!
Basically its osteoporosis big time. BUT my Mum has fallen over as well and apart from the same sort of brusing is OK. Why?
Well it turns out that my Mum has been taking Calcium suppliment for at least 50 years – but my Mum-in-Law has not, (despite being told 20 years ago that it was necessary after falling down stairs and breaking one wrist).
Please please please could all you female zeders start or continue to take Calcium supplements. I know that my tale is anechdotal – not statiscally significant - maybe non-representative BUT you really do not want to get into the position my Mum-in-Law is in. For the next 4 weeks she cannot do anything for herself – and I mean anything. Feeding her is fine, holding her drink is fine but you can only imagine her embarrisment every time she has to visit the loo. Otherwise she is in good shape – no marbles lost.
Fortunately we can share this task with my sister-in-law who lives quite close so we should count our blessings – my wife has been popping Calcium for some time now which is good since it needs to be taken early to be effective. I am no expert so look at http://www.nof.org/prevention/ for better info.
