Yesterday my car developed a really annoying new noise......BOLLOCKS!

Its a high pitched whining noise which happens under acceleration and its pitch seems to be revs related (it also happens in neutral)

However if I push the clutch in the noise stops.

Oh yeah and its really loud - I can hear it out side of the car

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Adam

Sounds like gearbox bearing(s) to me.

Does the sound change trough the gears?

Most probably your thrust bearing on your clutch.

Stuart

IMO it cant be the thrust bearing.

It doesnt spin until you press the clutch pedal down

and then the gearbox stops turning.

So it should only sound when you press the pedal

if the thrust bearing is broken.

viper is right - if it was the clutch release bearing, it would make a noise when the clutch pedal is depressed - if it goes when pressing the pedal its prob gonna be spigot bearing broken up in the end of the crank or input shaft bearing worn in the gearbox

The bearing is usualy in light contact with the spring fingers of the pressure plate. If it wasn't you would have a long clutch pedal as it would have to take up the gap between bearing and fingers as well as actually operating the clutch.

The drag on the bearing causes it to spin. On a knackered old dry bearing this results in the high pitch whining noise.

It goes away when you load the bearing, as you compress the inner and outer races together (taking all the free play away )

Hope this makes sense

not IME. loading up a worn bearing is much more likely to make the noise more apparent, without any pressure on the clutch, there is going to be very little, if any, pressure & contact with the clutch cover.

I know what you mean.

If this is the case you should be able to press the withdrawal lever back with the engine running and therefore the bearing should stop spinning.

Worth a try.

With most bearings i would agree with what you say, wheel bearing being a prime example.

Clutch release bearings are an exception. The fact that with no pressure on the clutch pedal the bearing is only in light contact with the spring fingers is what causes the high pitch noise. The fingers being sprung act as an amplifier.

Trust me if you've ever heard one it makes a noise like no other bearing you'll ever come across and is very distinctive.

Cheers
