Went past one of those damn speed enforcemnt vans today and pretty sure it was in use since I could see quasimodo sat behind the camera in the back of the van. Only problem is my Valentine One didn't make a peep. Went past it again after cleaning the lens just to make sure. :)

It's a model that is only a year old and claims to cover European frequencies so are the filth using using a new range of frequencies or have I missed something.

Nottingham gestapo use digital cameras from their vans now apparently, so perhaps yours are the same ?

Not been past one with my Bel 990 to be sure ! It certainly doesn't get triggered by the static digital cameras; because they don't actually emit anything !

Doesn't work against on Truvelos either, with the metal strips in the road - I really need to get one or the other of those GPS systems to go with the Bel !

:(

How do the static digital cameras work if they don't emit anything?

Your Valentine One is meant to be about the best there is so I think you'll find the camera wasn't in use.

AFAIK the vans use either a Gatso or tripod mounted laser gun so you should have picked it up.

I presume your detector is set up correctly and gets normal Gatso's? You can dissable unwanted frequencies on most of these devices now so hopefully you have it set OK.

Maybe it was just a Z fan taking pics of your motor? :D

The static digital cameras simply digitise a picture of your reg plate as you go past the first one, and then check how long it takes you to reach the second one, same priciple as VASCAR in police cars except that it doesn't require PC plod to manually press the buttons when you pass set points.

The only good news is if you don't notice the first camera until it's too late you can stop for a minute to bring your average speed down, and you'll be ok ! ;)

How the mobile digital cameras work, God only knows

Whats with all these wires they seem to be burieing (?) in the road at the moment? There is a box at the roadside but there doesnt appear to be a camera of any shape or form on any of em.

Wots that all about then?

I pretend to work, they pretend to pay me!

If there's a box that looks like a Gatso next to it then it's a Truvelo which uses the magnetic strips under the road to measure your speed (again no emissions for the detectors to pick up).

They also have mobile versions of these in Nottingham where they just run three rubber strips across the road with a tripod mounted camera. If there's just two rubber strips then you're safe as it's just a traffic survey.

You name it - we've got it here !

Cheers konrad,

There aint no large looking camera type box near any of em. Only a small grey post about 6 or 8 " square, about 2 foot tall. This must mean they have inserted the strips and the control box so they can buy less cameras and move em around like they do with the Gatsos.

Cheeky thing is they are all on nice straight stretches where the limit is 50 so once again spoiling our fun!!

Exactly the bloody case. 50 mph stretch that used to be 60, dead straight, no traffic at all on the reoad except for me

Did you see Captain Gatso in the papers who has a team of people who go around smashing and painting the lenses of cameras.

Sounds good to me :D

Paul

Maybe we could have a whip round to help subsidise his valiant cause ?

:D

posidrive,

So u got done by one of these dastardly devices?

Not 100% certain if I have been nicked. Will wait for the postman with baited breath over the next couple of weeks

Oops. Did I detect one of our boys in blue on the forum. Hope my descriptions didn't offend, but it really does piss me off when you have a dead straight completely empty piece of road where there has never been an accident or any saftey issues and you get a bloody speed trap on it whereas one of the most dangerous roads for miles around (several fatalities over the last few years) has never had a sniff of interest from the traffic cops.

Fume

at junc 26 - M5 towards bristol there is a contraflow with a 50 mph limit. i had my snooper on adn was doing 60. there were no gatsos. 1 week later 3 pts and 60 quid fine. no idea how they got me. my snooper is going in the bin as obviously useless!!

Sounds like you were got by one of those digital cameras that determine you average speed between two of them about a quarter of a mile apart. They use software to decode all numberplates passing them and automatically calculate the speed between the two cameras.

These seem to be increasingly popular in roadworks, especially on the M20. Fortunately these are bright yellow so difficult to miss. I should probably get one of those Geodessy or similar deteects to use with the Valentine

If only Nottingham's numerous digital cameras were bright yellow !

They comply with the letter of the law by making the camera itself yellow, but as the camera is tiny and stuck on the top of 30 foot dark blue poles hidden in trees you're not likely to notice them if you're new to the road.

Beware Nottingham's ring road and the A610 !

Arent the ones on poles the Trafficmaster ones? Thought they were there to monitor traffic flow and advise of traffic jams then send it thru to your vauxhall vectra hire car!!
