Can Anyone help please!!!!!

I have a '91 Jap 2+2 TT.

The Speedo was changed to MPH but now when i go over 100mph (on private roads of course) the speedo goes back to zero!!

The problem is with this is that the power steering kicks in and it all gets a bit scary.........

I've had the inline convertor changed and this hasnt made any difference so it must be something else.....

Any ideas??

Could be the speed sensor on the gearbox failing but I can't think why it would do it only over 100mph?

Most likely the speed convertor has been fitted incorrectly/in the wrong place? Is it behind the clocks where it needs to be?

As i understand it the convertor is an inline module attached to the speedo cable and works as a 'pulse convertor'.

The unit was replaced with a new one and was fitted behind the clocks.

Could it be anything to do with the ECU?

Dan mate,

Have you had the gauges chaged or the needles removed for any other reason???

I have exactly the same problem.

Had the speedo and dials changed and speed delimited. My symptoms are exactly the same as yours. Mine was not the speed sensor though, as I`ve just had a new one put on and the symptoms are still present. Will try another speedo next, see what good that does me.

Good luck with yours though

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm bad news - it's almost certainly the needles being removed/replaced rather heavy handed! I have experienced this on two clusters and although it is possible to recover it's unlikely that your speedo will ever be the same!

It means that the guy who changed your dials either pulled the whole needle from its location (rather than holding it with a pair of long nose pliers and just removing the pointer), or has pushed the needle or bent it or it's seating! The needle should 'float' - with the front bezel removed - can you flick the needle (gently) so that it goes all the way to the stop and then returns? If not VERY GENTLE pulling or pushing of the needle until you can - will fix your problem. There is also the possibility that you could screw it completely - you need to take a view on it!

Hope it helps in some way.

Thanks Andy.....

Is it easy to remove the cluster then?

Dan

Dan,

Quite easy - if you do a search I think it has been discussed many times.

Good luck.

How do I do a search?? I'm a new boy.

Click search at the top right.

To get the cluster off you just undo the 2 screws that hold the top cover over the dials.

The screws are under the lid that sticks out over the steering wheel.

There are 2 more holding the dials steady that will now be visible.

You might be able to sort it from there if you have small hands/can see what's wrong.

Only takes 2 minutes to do.

To get the whole lot out you need to take the pods off that have the aircon and fog buttons on etc. The fronts are screwed on from underneath and a couple of screws inside the pods at the back.
