Has it got an Alarm with a remote start feature ?

Only 2 things i can think of that can interfere with the ignition are a Turbo Timer and Alarm.

Hi mate , no it hasn't got either , very strange

Time to strip the steering column cowl and see if you can disconnect the ignition.

Depending on the series there is a few designs of ignition, hopefully you get lucky and its just a plugin job

Series 1 i believe was hard soldered, below picture is from series 2 and 3/4, white plug is from a series 3/4 and the black was a series 2 that i assisted in breaking.

Start the zed pull the plug and see if it stays on.

Hi mate, mine is a 1990 and luck aint on my side atm so I bet its hard soldered , I'll take a look thanks mate

A customer bought me his car a few months ago with this exact issue.  Engine wouldn't shut off with the key removed & he had to stall it to get it to shut off. Fixed it by changing out the ignition relay for a good one.

Hi mate, I've noticed the relay in the engine bay "ignition coil" gets warm and none of the others do, so maybe onto something with that?

Maybe so. The relay your describing is the relay i was suggesting you change in my previous relay to fix the issue your having. Swap it out with another one of the same colour temporarily to see if it fixes your issue and then report back.

Hi mate, pulled ignition coil relay in engine bay when running and killed it also, any ideas?

Cheers

Have you looked at the fuel sender unit? Sometimes a short there can cause issues like this? Did you do any electrical work just before this issues started? Did you install a new stereo/alarm/immobiliser/turbo timer or anything like that? Has the car always done it or is it a new problem?

I always try to think what I was doing when the issue started and trace back from there.

Hi mate,

Only electrical work I've done is injectors , it has had a new ecu and chip but everything is working as it should except the car won't shut off, the ignition coil relay in the bay kills it when I pull it out but the back switch on ignition doesn't,

The battery was completely flat and I charged that up don't know if a completely drained battery can do such thing idk maybe shorted something...

Strange these cars aha it's like it's possessed.

Definitly a strange one. Im thinking more and more that its to do with the ignition as JaiKai pointed out. Maybe a dry solder joint as yours is an early one.

Errrrr....*brain whirring*.....yes?

What about a sticky fuel pump relay? When you cut the power it doesn't trip back to closed position and continues to pump fuel therefore keeping the engine alive?
