Hi All,

Took my Z to an auto specialist (Chester Automatic Transmissions) - fair play, it's a good place and they know what they're on about. They do a lot of work on Z autos, had another one in besides mine.

Anyway, they reckon it's lunched, fluid was almost black, leaking seals, magnet swamped by fine particles, aluminium streaks in the fluid odd bits of metal. I only took it in to have solenoids replaced :'(

Going manual now :-) as they want £2000+ to replace the autobox.

Anyone know where I can get this done (apart from SE - too far and don't have £1000 to spend!!)

I have a brand new 90 Jap auto three solenoid kit (shift A, B and LP) and tranny pan bolt set if anyone's interested - cost me £150+ and was a special search and order... £100+post anyone?? I guess Nissan may take it back for a restocking charge anyway...

Cheers!!

AndyZ was selling all you needed for an Auto to Manual conversion. Have a look.

Was your box staying in second and not droping to third (fine from First to second)??

Yes Roy, we had the same problems.

I did find though, that if I screwed the nuts off it in second (up to 7000 rpm) and then shut the throttle off, the tacho needle often bounced up to 2000rpm and it had slipped into third, I'd then put it in hold and trundle along in third/lock until I had to stop for a junction etc...

If it is a solenoid problem I have/had then it's probably due to some debris interfering with operation.

This is without a doubt the one and only time I will buy an auto - only bought it 'cos manuals were thin on the ground and mine was cheap/tidy. I have to say it's a laugh though when you boot it at 60mph :-P

Cheers!!

Rob,

Luke at the zcentre.co.uk is shortly to be converting mine to manual. You'll have to source your own bits though 'cause I got his last one !

I did find an importer that's got a manual box coming into the country in a few weeks though. Try Mark on 01908 210352.

Does anyone want to comment on the cost of the conversion to Manual?

Mine's costing £1400, including a short throw gearstick. I have had to source a new clutch, gear knob and gaiter though.

Painful, but then it cost me that to repair my auto box a couple of years ago and I REALLY don't want have to fork out again in another couple of years !

Konrad, are the extra parts on top of your £1400?? What's Luke's waiting time like at the mo'??

SE are £1000 inc. according to AndyP. I'm waiting for Johnny to get back to me with a price.

Cheers

£1400 all in? labour and all parts needed?

Konrad small point;)

You are fitting a SECOND HAND box,you can't guarantee you will have no problems with it for two years.

Andyp did the auto to man conversion only to find the box was in need of repair:(

IMHO the only way to do this is to have the box striped down and repaired if needed, now add that price to the fitting, box, propshaft, clutch etc:rolleyes:

My Auto box is the SE fast roadbuild, and is still working 100% 30k miles later,Don't think that the auto box is total crap.It all depends on who rebuilds it;)

Mac if you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for SE to do you Auto Fast Roadbuild and was there a big differance

I've just spoken to Luke and he'll do the job for £700 labour, providing you can supply all the parts (although he'll source the clutch if required and can supply short-throw gearsticks).

I know there's another z being converted before mine, and then mine, obviously, so I reckon you're looking at 4-6 weeks, but Luke says to phone him (0115 9676356). I can certainly vouch for Luke, he's been seriously involved with Zs for 20 odd years and really knows his stuff !

Mac - I agree with your points entirely but my box was supposedly uprated with hardened parts not three years ago but is now mush. It's just a case of once (well twice I guess!) bitten, twice shy !

The one thing I've got in my favour is that the box is coming out of Luke's project car as he's putting a 5.6 litre Corvette engine into it and needs a different box. He at least knows where his own car's been and I've been a customer of his for four years now.

Plus, of course, if something does go wrong with a manual box, (which seems to happen less than the autos), it's cheaper to fix!

I have really enjoyed my auto box but I'm looking forward to my standing starts now; it'll be sorta like having a new car !! :D

LOL........but it still maybe, just a little....:D :D

Macca, i personally have to agree with u there. When i first bought my motor last yr the autobox was K.O'd. Anyway, bk then i didnt know much about the 300 nor the best places to go to etc etc...

But i do remember u telling me that SE did a F*uckin Blindin job on ur box!!!! and how i SOOOOOO regret not going to them, my box cost 2000squids to get rebuilt and its still running shite!

Its about going to the right people! even if ur local auto specialists have been working on autos for donkey's yrs....they still wouldn't know F-all about a 300ZX's, these are 'unique' motors:D

Basically, whatt i wanted to ask was, MACCA MATEY HAVE U GOT SE's NUMBER?

cheers mate

fast road rebuild £1400

remove and refit £250.

The fast-road rebuild specification will improve the change speed on very powerfull cars, through a higher applied pressure to the clutch packs.

This prevents scorching of the friction materials during the second phase of upshift, leading to a more positive change and less wear.

bagins the differance from a stock box to this conversion is a big differance beleive me.

I have done 30k on this box,and it is still as good from the day it was fitted, now how many manuals out there with the bhp my car is putting out could do 30k without needing a clutch???:D
