2002 Porsche 996 3.6 315bhp Full Leather high spec car.

Only fault needs an engine rebuild, really looking forward to it.

 

Fun will start in 2 weeks

I got the Oxidation and Rust Removal Ultrasonic Cleaner Solution - 5 Litre Cleaning Fluid, There are many different cleaning fluids, the cheap ones don’t really work. I will use ACF-50 to coat all the parts to protect them.

Bit of an update, cleaning sure takes a long time.

Crank carrier back together, just waiting on the new chains to arrive before putting it in.

 

I am going to replace all the suspension arms, not cheap. I had fun trying to get the passenger assembly out, the main problem is releasing the handbrake cable.

 

Drivers side stripped down, new arms coming tomorrow, bit more cleaning to do.

It is amazing the Germans think of everything, rear lights that come out with 1 bolt for a handy shelf and cup holder.

 

Unfortunately I will miss my deadline for the stupid ULEZ expansion and will have to come down via the Dartford Crossing at the end of the month.

Then it will be the turn for the underside of the Zed, underseal, brake pipes, rear sills. The fun never stops.

Unfortunately there are parts that can only be refurbished by a place in Czech Republic, exchange surcharge, pain in the neck.

This throw away society is horrendous.

Managed to get the other half of the engine together, you have five minutes before the sealent goes off. It is a harder task because you have to put the piston in then turn it upside down, look through a small hole, knock piston up till it lines up with the piston rod, put gudgen pin in then the clip blindly in. Made my own tool.

I cleaned the suspension and installed new arms. Heads will go back on next week.

Bit more progress, soon find out if I’m going to have a very expensive paper weight. Everything has been covered in ACF-50 I will use that on the 300 if luck with the 996.

I have been busy with finishing the engine, it is now back together with gearbox. We slid the engine on the ATV jack made a trolly for gearbox, then lowered the car with the engine hoist.

Connected everything up that had to be just in case it went “bang”. Was scared.

 

cleaned engine bay, nice new brembo brakes to fit.

I am very pleased runs great, was a huge risk buying a non running Porsche. I don’t think I would do it again the engine build was hard any mistake could have been extremely expensive, I can build my brothers lotus twin cam with my eyes shut, this was on a different level. Still have a week worth of bits to do, road test MOT etc.

Hi guys well Christmas and being so cold got in the way of finishing the 996. 

 

 

So in January we had a problem, the car ran great but as soon as it was put into gear, it coughed and spluttered. Working with a tech on the 911 forum we tried everything, tested all electrics, MAF needed replacing, did find that 1 of pre cat O2 sensors was faulty car has 4 sensors, got a proper blowtorch and changed them, found a few air leaks sorted them but still no joy, seemed better but as soon as you put your foot on the gas under load it was over fuelling.

 

The other problem was the car came with an incorrect ECU and Alarm so I had to purchase one from a scrappy.

Alarm bells should have rung at that stage, but it looked so nice lol.

Couple of weeks passed and after tearing my few remaining hairs out, the Tech guy said you built the engine it was not a heard of problem and we never had the car running before we touched it.

He said

{This is the difference between normal faults and Induced faults .. an Induced one is something that has happened during work on the car .. as such .. it's a bitch to find !! 

 

Imagine engine out .. lots of bits replaced .. back in an issue .. if you have replaced one item and this happens you know what it is .. when many .. it becomes difficult .. probably the worst fault to find regardless !! }

We can have the same issues at times and we do this for a living .. not every new part actually works so being told its a new maf etc .. 

Doesn't mean anything in my book ... long process of elimination follows.

So over dinner one night my brother asked me had I checked the injectors were correct, I said do you think I’m stupid of course I checked the code numbers. He said that I had complained to him I did not like how they seated in the when installed.

I showed him the order and he said straight away there wrong.

Well I was devastated. So 5hrs later and a lot of searching for the old ones we put them in was a pig of a job.

Car started and everything was good.

So check check and double check.

 

Now on to the final jobs.

I took the front bumper off, looked at the rads they were all original so I am going to change them.

I could not believe there is 3 cooling rads and 2 air con rads. What a joke.

Still waiting on centre rad from Germany.

 

Only have till the end of the month before the MOT runs out on my 300, then its her turn for sills, rear subframe and fuel pipes under sealing, I will really miss driving her been my daily for quite a while now.

Were the new injectors letting air in from not being seated correctly?

Hi they were a little but the main factor was the fuel rate was to slow, thus ECU over fuelling to correct but couldn’t.

Front of car all cleaned up, new rads fitted and everything sprayed with Dinitrol  Corroheat 4010 great product.
