This issue on the box has been going on for many a year. I have adjusted my driving according to the problem. Im getting the famous crunch from 3 to 4 on the box. Any good gearbox retcons you recommend. Cheers

What - going from 2nd to 5th?

Any good gearbox retcons you recommend. Cheers

Have you tried Redline MT-90? My gearbox became noticeably smoother after about 1000 mile run in.

Hi Andrew, long time no see bud....... the issue hasn't got any worse over the years but irritating because when I'm putting the car to work it will crunch between 3 to 4 but I'm going to try that redline. I'm going to fluid changes all round.

Its a known fault which was solved on the later boxes with a double cone.If the oil does not cure it i would get a new box as a rebuild will be mental money. The revised parts included a fork and new gear which i doubt are available now anyway.

cheers bud. So the days of rebuilding have gone :sad: How much do man boxes go for now?

Problem with manual box is any coming off a breaker will be getting sold as a conversion kit more than likely and they are up at about 800 now I think.

A new box is approx. $1800 + shipping and taxes from CZP or Z1 Motorsports.

When I was looking at a manual conversion I also called my local Nissan garage. I can't remember how much they said, but I remember that it was more than CZP/Z1.

Used boxes are often sold as full conversions, although I've seen a few recently which have been sold separately. I think Banzi Breakers may have had one for sale...

I've asked a couple of times and I haven't come across anyone who can recommend a garage to rebuild a manual box. Maybe that will change as good used units become harder to find?

I've had exactly the same fault with my box for a number of years now...3rd to 4th was a problem but the more power I got the worse it became and now me/jimmer have pushed the power well over 500 bhp when I engage 4 it just spits it out.... So as these boxes won't be around forever I've just got a nice new one with folk and clutch upgrade...not worth buying second hand get them while you can.

Hi bud,

If you don't mind me asking where did you get the box from? I know the clutch is in excellent condition and a higher spec. PM me the details and price if you don't want to go public. thanks

I have just managed to get a second hand gearbox + for a manual conversion at £1000!

This is my second attempt at sourcing a manual conversion, so that is for the lot.

I did see a couple of manual gearboxes for sale a few months ago at around £850 but they are getting rare!

I have also just received a full clutch assembly from Mike too at £340. Thanks Mike great service.

So hopfully get started soon & back on the road.

I got it for Graham from CZP.its a sit down price well over 2k landed but i think that is cheap being honest for a new 5 speed box.

Excuse me for what might be a stupid question,

Is there not another manual gearbox that will marry up to the engine of the zx?

That is less expensive from the Nissan or jap market?

Yes 350z 6 speed box just get a conversion kit.

Worth considering this:

Z32 5-speed:

1st - 3.214

2nd - 1.925

3rd - 1.302

4th - 1.000

5th - 0.752

Diff - 3.69 TT or 4.08 NA

Z33 6-speed:

1st - 3.784

2nd - 2.324

3rd - 1.624

4th- 1.271

5th - 1.000

6th - 0.794

Diff - 3.538

Z32 1st is already pretty low and top gear on the Z33 is even taller than the Z32.

Has anyone on here done this?

Probably not in the UK since the owners is small and we don't vary me ch f I'm the norm.

Interesting, have you got any more info on this?

Have a search on Google I think it might have been JWT that got involved in them.

I know I wasn't recommending it it just expands people's thinking.

Many engineering possibilities we may be geared to off the shelf solutions in the UK though.

Interesting thought though that 350 box!

[sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

I've looked into the 350Z gearbox before, albiet very briefly.

I read in a few places that they are not as strong as the 300ZX box and the gear ratios did not lend themselves to turbos.

"Just get a conversion kit" Have you seen whats involved and the cost.Mazworx sell a kit and it is not cheap at all.By the time you buy a Box,Get the kit,Have a prop made you are into new 98 box money.

Well the ask was what other options are there Jimmer haha so there is another option. Alternatively get an engineering qualification and come up with another solution.

I certainly wasn't going to offer up an idea of a cheap bodge corner cutting alternative it's not my style.

Could however circumvent gearbox issues with an engine transplant.
