Possible power steering issue

Hi Guys,

I might have an issue so just after some pointers really, I seem to have an intermittent issue with the power steering. Some mornings it won't kick in for the first couple of minutes of driving and the last week or so I've noticed a slight whine on wheel turn.

This afternoon I checked the level which was a little on the low side so topped it up and gave it a little drive around the carpark, the whine was still there but the steering felt fine.

Are there any common issues with the power steering? Or anybody have any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks for the help again!

Unsure of the ATF brand, one I had available. Wasn't Dexron though. I thought ATF was all generally the same.

You must use ATF Dexron type fluid in the PS/HICAS system. Using power steering fluid will cause the PS system to break down

and eventually fail.

It is covered in the FSM and owner's manual (type B is TT model).

There is a good write-up on PS problems and solutions on TT.net:

Don't stress about the fluid if it was cherry red a said at for auto gearboxes and steering on it will be fine. As the issue is also intermittent then it's unlikely more than just the speed variable assistance playing up.

It is designed to lessen the assistance as you get faster to prevent over sensitive issues.

So look at the solenoid connection on the end of the rack, this only works on 5volts and can suffer from bad connection issues. Also check if the speedo is not working when the lack of assistance occurs, a speed sensor circuit or dash cluster fault could be the culprit.

The steering whine from the pump can be an indicator of a worn pump or cavitation leading to air bubbles check in the reservoir for clear cherry red fluid rather than light red foam.
