Morning all,

I don't suppose anyone knows (or has 2 spare) the spec of these radio fixing screws?

(And why do people keep bodging their stereo installs when it's got a mount for the units and if you take the mount out properly, there's a lot more room to work?)

You’re in luck, I’ve got two left. They're not in great shape, the heads are very rounded but they’ll keep you’re head unit fixed in properly. PM me your address and I’ll send them out to you.

they are radio manufacturer dependent Mike, as i had to find different ones last time i swapped radio around.

I didn't know that. But still worth a try. My Series 1 had a Nissan pair of head units (wish I'd kept them now for historical accuracy!) as did my S6. The screws from the S1 fitted my Sony head unit. I took that out and fitted it to my S3. Then that got replaced with a JVC unit which also ended up in my S6. Since I'm now installing another JVC unit, I could be lucky.

And thanks, Chris300, even if they are a bit rounded, at least I should be able to wave them at a hardware store or local car stereo bod and ask "have you got one of these" which always helps.

Never knew that Craig....

…..I have just re-used the little OEM screws every time I have replaced the head unit! They are the perfect fitment, as they hold the after-market head unit in place and don't protrude too far beyond the case so as to cause damage!

I have also re-used the OEM brackets too - all after-market ones (including those supplied with DD radio surround) just don't line up properly

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Chris's screws turned up (thanks) but didn't fit. Checked the manual and bought exactly the spec in the manual. They didn't fit either!

Chris's on the right, new on the left. M5 countersunk 8mm long. Exactly the same (other than finish).

I've tried an M4 also - they just drop into the hole - they're too small. Reported to JVC and they confirm the spec of the unit "may have changed" as their M5 doesn't fit either and don't know what the thread is! They've queried with Japan.

If someone's got the audio brackets out, could they please measure the distance (hole centre to hole centre) of the screw holes - I'm thinking that getting a tap to ream out the holes in the radio to 5mm might be the simplest solution.

Who thought installing a new radio would be quite such a faff? Cheers.

The screws may have imperial threads Mike. No 10 size is 0.19" diameter which is 4.826mm so will look like M5.

Same kit here (although four are described as metric):

Pardon the bad drawing but I thought that better than trying to tell you the measurements.

Thanks Chris300, spot on.

Thanks AndrewG - the JVC manual spec and pic said 5mm which is why I queried it with JVC UK who said "er, yeh. We tried one here and you're right, it's not 5mm" !

the screws you want will have a very coarse thread like a self tapper Mike
Eventually JVC heard back from JVC Japan who said use self tappers and they're sending me some. So we'll see if they're the same as the ones posted by veilside01702.

The 2 things that are odd about this. 1 this is the third aftermarket stereo (1 Sony, 2 JVC) I have put into 4 Zeds. All the Nissan units (obvs), the Sony and the 1st JVC all used the standard OEM screws like the ones Chris300 sent me. It's only this new JVC that doesn't. And 2. if they want self-tappers why don't they bloody say so in the manual (and why didn't JVC UK know?).

I'll post a pic of the ones they send when they get here.

Thanks, all.

the normal threaded ones are just like some of the old HDD or CD drive mounting screws you used to get on the PC, but i have found a couple of the recent units i have installed in ours and daughters cars, have had either those coarse screws, or the original type, and both the same manufacturer!

Like these???

Aha! Looks like veilside01702 had the right ones. The JVC ones arrived today and here's a pic of what they sent (top - they fit) and these look like veilside01702's pic. Does anyone know what they're called? Obviously, they're not M5 8mm long. The others are the shop-bought M5 and the OEM ones sent by chris. I don't think the ones from JVC or veilside01702's are the spec that JVC put in the manual (so I've pointed that out but don't expect any change. They also came in a little pack with 4 countersunk and 4 domed so my guess is these are bagged for use in Japan units but taken out as cost saving for export. Hey ho, you live and learn.

Might actually get round to doing the install sometime :)

Mike, they are in the ebay link I provided above (Type B thread).

From the pics, I see what you mean. But neither of those Ebay listings say they are 5mm dia screws which is what the JVC manual says. If the JVC manual had said ISO screws or #10 3/8 or if JVC UK Head Office had said what to look for, it would have been easier. But when they tested in their workshop, they agreed with me that "the screw size it said in their manual didn't fit" and didn't have an answer.

Plus my previous experience that the OEM screws have been OK for all the other units I've put in/taken out (including the last JVC). So far, the score seems to be AndrewG 1: the combined team of 2 Ebay sellers, Nissan, 2 screw experts, JVC manual and JVCKenwood UK 0. :D

PS I just remembered a thread gauge I was told about by an engineering mate of mine when he was explaining (one of those bar conversations) about AF, Whitworth and DFF. We've all come across DFF - doesn't effing fit :)
