My insurance, tax and MOT are all due to expire this month and I’m toying with the idea of getting the car SORN with the intention of stripping the underside for a refresh. However I’m wondering if I can insure the 300 while it’s off the road and if so what I need to ask for (it would be just my luck if I had a garage fire). So can you get SORN cover and if so who is recommended?

Many thanks for your advice,

Chris.

I looked into this when mine was off the road for the same reason. I recall different companies giving it different names like “laid up” insurance etc. I think the premium cost was similar to a normal premium and as I didn’t know how long it would be off the road for I just took out a normal premium.

Footman James are usually very good with these bespoke type policies, they may be a good place to start to get some quote comparisons with the other usual suspects.

My car was SORN'd for quite a few years and I insured it through Lynbrook (Classic specialists) and the premium was something like £25. I can't find the old Policy Documents but I think it covered Fire & Theft. I believe you HAVE to insure it when it's SORN'd.

Now it's back being driven again the Fully Comp premium is £265.

Thanks guys, I’ll make a few calls. My renewal quote for this year was only £145 but I was hoping that as it was off the road I’d be able to get it sorted for under £50.

The car is now SORN. I still need to sort out the insurance but I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into my refurb.
