:( said he could also have failed it for noise as it's a non standard exhaust (but wouldn't).

Anyone else come across needing cats for later cars? Or know of a 'decent' garage in west london?

Edit: Passed fine last time, he said it's to do with the new rules introduced in 2018

the loophole used to be if it was a vehicle/engine combination used before the cats became law they would pass it, this however may have changed in the new rules. it is however worth checking the import date of your car, it'll be on your log book as first registered date, if it's after 2001/2 i believe all cars should have cats, you will just need to show them the car is older as they test it as it was new at the first registered date, had it with mine year before last as it was imported/registered 2002, i just had show them the log book showing 1990 as manufacture year

He just said the system told him cars that age needed a cat, full stop. Reading this (assuming it's up to date) it still only needs to basic emissions test as it was first used June 95, but can't find anything about visual inspection of cats

  • Author

Well this says the visual requirement is only for cars needing a full cat test, which mine doesn't, so as far as I can tell the rules haven't changed, but maybe the software they use has (hence it prompted him)? Not sure what I should do...

He’s incorrect

90% of 300ZX’s DO NOT NEED CATS for an MOT. It is NOT listed on the Appendix for Emmisions testing and therefore only has to comply with a Non Cat Test. Only vehicles with manufacture dates after Aug 1995 are subject to the tighter emmsions tests

Thanks, so it hasn't changed and is as I thought. Guess I'll just take it to another garage round the corner and see what they say!

If you’re only in Wokingham mate, bring it over to Bone AS& Sons In Hook, they test my Z and are good as gold

But print off those pages and carry them with you for MOT time... some testers have to be reminded of the standards our cars are subject to. (Bones should be fine though)

Was just thinking to myself I need to update my location  in Feltham now but if I get stuck I'll look them up! Thanks though

That DVSA link is interesting.

Mines a 1995 so I thought it’d need a cat test. I’ll show my tester tomorrow.

I’d take the documentation back to the garage that failed you so you don’t have to pay for a retest.
He didn't actually charge me (abandoned the test) so he was quite nice about it!

Interesting that the Z32 doesnt appear in the appendix when most other Nissans do ?

Because the Z was pulled from the U.K. market in 94, while all the others on the list were available after that.

Can one of the admins make the VOSA link a sticky, as it’s a Q that regularly comes up.

Yes I'm slightly embarrassed I had to ask [emoji14] but I was thrown by him saying it was a new rule.

Funny how I've never associated the emissions regs with the end of UK sale but I guess they align!

Did you say the guy abandoned the test and didn't charge you?

So fingers crossed that the rest of the car passes (after the nedd/no need cats issue is sorted).

I have been told that the Aussie spec Z32 is like the UK spec. Seems there is a difference because we have always had cats as a standard feature.

So from my understanding, the law that required new vehicles to have a catalytic converter came into effect for U.K. market vehicles in Sept 1992. However there was a period of grace until August 1995 for manufacturers to make cars that were already in production to meet the new emissions regs. Theoretically, as the Z came with cat converters from the get go(QLDZDR, our cars also had cats as standard from 1989), it should have been subject to the cat emissions standards.... I can only guess that because U.K. sales stopped during that period of grace they simply never added it to the Annex sheet.... can’t say I’m complaining mind!

Yea, to be fair pretty good of him. Mines an import, and did have cats as standard, but I've removed them.

Passed this morning at another garage though :) he started doing the wrong emissions test as well, but was quite happy with my sheet. He was really good actually, spent the time to point out a few niggly little bits to me because he knew I'd like to see!

One of which was both front coolant hoses collapsed...never seen that before. It did take a while to heat up. When he undid the rad cap they popped back out. The cap wasn't quite on properly though, so I'm hoping its just that doing something weird. Was fine after the drive home, will have to keep an eye on it.

This is the flowchart that should be followed for an MOT emissions test. The important point is that the Z32 300ZX

is NOT in the "EGA database or the In-service Emissions book" So for Z32s first used before August '95 a

"Non-cat test" should be followed.

She's so fine, there's no tellin' where the money went - Simply irresistible.

The importer should have declared your cars manufacture date as 1995 on your V5, that’s what is referred to for “vehicles first use” and what defines the age related number plate DVLA give you Car. Date of importation has no bearing on the emissions testing
