The process to clean up and freshen up the appearance of the top end of my engine has begun. Prior to fitting a new OEM 95+ harness, 740cc injectors and BDE VTC cam gears, I have gotten hold of a bunch of spare odds and sods to get refinished.

My engine is pretty clean anyway but as the entire top end is being stripped down, I thought it high time to make everything totally fresh and new-looking before reassembly.

I've just picked up these from the vapour blaster, they're going straight to the powder coaters tomorrow to be done OEM finish, well, apart from the outer rocker covers as they're a natural alloy finish and I'll be doing those a satin silver just for some added protection.

They came up pretty well.

The intake manifold is at the vapour blasters now and will be being coated in ACF50 prior to me collecting it. The spare throttle housings will be heading there as soon as a I've finished stripping them.

The donor ones I've got are in decent condition, just absolutely filthy.

I've taken one apart to look at the rather nasty brown finish on the throttle return springs. It appears these springs are actually nickel plated, I've removed some of the finish here but they'll be going to the vapour blasters to remove all traces of it. There are a number of other springs which will be going there too.

All the steel pressings which make up the throttle mechanism will be removed and will be going to the electroplaters to be refinished in a smart cadmium plate which feature on 95+ Z32s and look a little cleaner than the nasty standard olive drab.

IMG-20181105-WA0008.jpg

I actually have quite a few other metal pressings and various fasteners at the electroplaters which I'm collecting tomorrow such as the hose unions on the intake manifold, the throttle cable brackets and various assorted bolts and harness clips.

As I have a 95+ harness, I need to fit the newer style crank angle sensor. I picked a used one up in the US and partially stripped it. The main bracket and the back plate are being vapour blasted and will be anodised silver to match the face of the sensor which I had to paint as the bearing is pressed in. It gave me the opportunity to follow the how2 on TT. NET to clean the sensor ring. There was no debris inside, so the unit is in very decent shape.

This wondrous hose turned up from Japan today. New old-stock which you can't buy from Nissan anymore, this part has been NLA for as long as I can remember!

Here's the other U-shaped one which routes from the offside intake union to the check valve, again, this has been NLA for years

New fuel pressure regulator and fuel dampener.

Other reasons behind this are the fact that last year I had an injector start to fail which was replaced. I'm still on the original ones so I'm on borrowed time with them and they have never been calibrated so they're going to be junked in favour of much more modern and reliable pintless injectors.

Since I want to futureproof and add performance, the obvious choice were 740 NISMO injectors. There are lower flow rate ones but the price difference was so small it made no sense to go for the 615s. Because the 740s are a 'new style' injector, they won't fit my standard harness which really needs replacing anyway. As a number of OE harnesses have already been discontinued, I thought it wise to invest in a new genuine one whilst I could (they're better quality than the WS ones)!

I went for the 95+ as there are a few minor improvements that were made, the deleting of the nasty series 2 PTU 'bodge' harness, the change from a permanent positive feed to the injectors to a switched one, some addition plastic harness casing and the fact that it was all ready for the new style injectors. No point in butchering a new 91 harness!

This thread should become a little more interesting as I start to get parts back from the platers and built up the throttle housings etc.

The U shaped hose - I carefully migrated that from my donor on Sunday, it was in beautiful condition and even more pleasing now it's NLA.

Edit and looking into this again, the one I took off my 94 is not genuine, I did think it might of been a Nissan cost saving exercise but it's clearly been swapped out, you have to ask yourself why and using the jubilee clips , so this is now on my donor.

So how many hundreds time better is this, even the milky fold over clip on mine was broke but not anymore :thumbup1:.

Picked up a box of parts from the platers earlier. Here's a small selection.

Had a spare set of absolutely disgusting rocker covers.

received_553016268472304.jpg

Had them fully degreased and vapour blasted. Got rid of all the crap and left a perfect surface to powder coat.

I had them done the factory original. Well, the bare alloy bits I had done a satin silver to protect and keep fresh. I had thought about doing the whole lot silver or the whole lot satin black but decided to keep it as originally intended. Very happy with the results. I use a very good powder coater in Bristol who Jimmer uses.

Got the freshly cadmium plated breather pipes ready.

DSC_2489.jpg

Used a flat ended rubber mallet to beat them back in. Very very snug fit so thankfully no sealant was required.

Earthing screw at the ready.

Made a new earthing strap for the fuel rail.

that looks so nice, lots of shiny clean components to install.

Looking forward to seeing the before and after engine bay shot.

As Gaz said "how to improve on perfection" well if it was perfection then you couldn't improve on it, but we get the drift.

keep on with the updates Si :thumbup1:

Things look nice when they're clean and/or plated. Still tons of stuff to do, but offered these up. :)

Throttle housings now stripped and at a machine shop to be enlarged for bigger butterflies.

Got round to stripping this centre support joiner too. The spindle taps out with all the springs, bushings and cable levers. The tin work will be going for replating. This is a spare UK set which already come cadmium plated, I cleaned this up, but there is still tarnishing and surface corrosion which would still visible if fitted to the car, so I need to get this replated to match the other bits.

The alloy parts will be vapour blasted and then sealed with ACF50 just like the manifold was. The throttle housings will also be done and all the replated tin pressings for those will be fitted.

Throttle bodies now bored out from 50mm to 54mm. Flow test results on similarly enlarged bodies show a 33% increase in air flow.

Just need to be reassembled now.

These will then be vapour blasted, sealed with ACF50 and then the remainder of the assemblies rebuilt once I have everything back from the platers.

An engineering firm down here in the south west. PowerZed are going to be offering this service soon on core-exchange, so keep your eyes peeled. :)

Cool, did you source new Deralin washers?

Z1 do a replacement kit with new delrin washers however the ones I have are in good shape.

Thanks Dave!

Picked up some more stuff today, there's a whole bag of it. I can actually start to reassemble some of the throttle components. The housings and central joiner are still at the vapour blasters awaiting collection, I need to work out which way round all the springs and washers go! Most of it is cadmium plated, springs were stripped and silver plated.
