I'm planning on buying a 300zx but a freind of mine has one and say's his 300zx has broken down 3 time's so do 300zx allways have lot's of promlems.

Featured Replies

mines only ever let me down once - failed PTU, which is a common problem.

some others here have had more than thier fair share though :(

You'll get a huge variety of responses - all dependent on the car and the amount of TLC it's had.

I had mine for 2 years, upgraded to around 430 bhp and it never missed a beat.

Others have had standard ones which have broken down every 2 weeks. It's all down to the care it's had.

If I was buying another (and one day I'd love to), I'd want to see service history including receipts for all it's life in the UK and, at a minimum, for the last 2 years. Have a look at the receipts and see what work is being done and the frequency. I'd always look for preventative work being done as well as repair.

No they don't.......but don't forget that most of these cars are from between 1989 - 1993 (I know they made them up to Y2K - but there aint many of them on here!) so component failure will start to crop up. How many cars on a H/J/K plate would you rush out to buy because they are so reliable? A lot can happen and a lot can wear out in 10 years:(

But most of them are pretty good, and at the end of the day they are a thrilling drive and lovely to look at......go on, it's dirty and its wrong but you know you want to!:D

Had mine for nearly 5 years and it's only ever let me down once with a clutch failure (and even then it was still driveable!).

It's the general running costs you need to consider mainly - they are expensive to maintain; servicing and parts can be very pricey, especially when you consider how much technology comes with the car !

Oh, and you might spend a bit on fuel too ! :D

Relatively speaking they're not that expensive. If you compare parts / servicing with other cars which cost £34,000 ten years ago - or have the supercar performance, they're relatively cheap.

And if you look after them, reliable (Japanese, after all)

Cheers - Gio

Mines only come to a grinding halt once and that was due to the autobox failure. Had I known then what I knew now I may have been able to prevent that. Whether I would have done is a different matter, but that's hindsight for you !

Aside from that, wear and tear has been in line with that of a 10 year old car.

Started every time first time, even in temperatures at -7ºC.

Few problems.

Clutch went but it was drivable, just couldnt floor it, and that is wear and tear. The that clutch actually lasted over 70,000 miles.

Radiator leaked but got it rebuilt next day.

Car stalled when slowing down, twice. It was the TPS, unscrewed it, cleaned it with a cloth and WD40 put it back on and it's been perfect since. 5 min job.

Oh yeah, I agree with that completely Gio (as supercars go they're fantastic; I even used mine as my main transport for nearly 3 years!), but most people buy them as their first supercar; and the servicing etc comes as quite a shock after your average Ford.

have mine going on 3years , had water pump go

at about 60k, meant i had to do 60kservice.

radiator prung leak probably my fault ,by opening cap

while pressure was too high. anyway got a new one.

always start on a diime runs smooth,

and imagine this is live on a volcanic island..

....power to the zed...

Had mine 4 and a half years and only problems have been PTU, Turbos and now the clutch.

Regular servicing and maintenance on these cars is invaluable.

Anita.

Easy, if you're on a tight budget even buying the car, forget it. Otherwise just buy one and see :D This is never a simple question as failures can happen on any car, at any time. Some people are unlucky, others have many trouble free miles. Service history has a huge part to play in it all, BUT, how well was the servicing carried out. FSH isn't a guarantee! I've had a radiator go, tie-rod bushes needed replacing, stuck n/s/f caliper, and the big one, the turbos failed. Even with all this, I love the car and can't wait to get it back on the road - any other with problems like this would have been pushed off several cliffs by now ;)

Totaly agree with the Duffmiester! Service history is only worth its ink if the man with the job sheet in Nissan knows his stuff! - I had to stand toe to toe with my local nissan dealer & tell him that UK cars have adj rear suspention after they orderd the wrong one! FFS???

My only failure in nearly 3 yrs of Z ownership have been the PTU, & that only needed cleaning to get the green off, hasn't missed a beat since (2 1/2 years ago) tlc is -as said a cruicial part of these cars/hobby!

It needent be expensive & they arn't that hard to look after - thats what this place is for, there are people here who can guide you through wire by wire / screw by screw detail of anything:)

Perhaps the biggest word of warning whould be DON'T skimp or bodge, ask!!!

Hello Mate,

Like Gio says it is a 10 year old supercar and the best bet is if you want one, get one from somebody on this forum. At least you know there is a fair chance it is looked after!

When you buy it change the oil and filter every 3k, anitfreeze every two years, and change the gearbox oil, bleed the brakes.

If you want to do something to the car you do a search on this forum or TT.net or the aus forum. That way you get the best piece of kit and usually for the best price!

If you want to mod it in anyway or do major work, find out who the best mechanic is in your area by asking on this forum. Get peoples numbers and ring em up ask their opinion!

We probably do this because we love the car, but in the end you become bitter! You have dreams of Twin Turboing a convertible Z, your mind becomes a blur of "how to pages", you know Courtesey Nissans Sales people by their first names "Butch" (in case you want to know). Will it be 2530's, GT25's, JWT 650's, then theres the chips, SE, Mines, JWT, Emanage, Unichip?

Life is getting better, after a couple of Tamazapan and a bottle of scotch!

:D

Mark

Trust you to deal with 'Butch', Mark... ;) :D

Could be worse - they have, or had, a 'Randy' working for them!

I kid you not..

I think 300zxs are realiable - after all they are Nissans!!!

I've had mine over 2 years - and t/w no problems. Regular good servicing are a must for any car let alone a supercar. But it also depends on how much you use it and how you drive it.

Geoff.

Had mine almost 3 years, only let me down once coming back from Trax last year AFM:( but I repaired it:D My Z has been one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned!

So how is it you came to have an SE autobox rebuild ?

only prob i ever had was duff battery.

the guys are absolouto righto....this is no mondeo. Lots of TLC and lots of care when buying (we all wanted to avoid a shed) and it will be all good. We all want to avoid the unexpected but then if you want boring Ford reliability you gotta buy a boring Ford (oh yeah, that ST24 now that`s a car!!)

Know what I mean?

All japes aside though, for a supercar, my old thunder starts each morning, every morning without fail. treat it right and it will treat you right. As my gramp used to say " the more you flog a car the more your garage bills will cost". Never a truer word said about a ZED.
