I have had an intermittant mis from the engine.....sometimes its smooth as a dye other times very lumpy with a definate miss.

I have only done 50 miles in the last few weeks in the car and there is just below quarter tank of fuel in it......any ideas guys....i was gonna get ma timing belt/cam seals done today but not thats out the window.....

Any help much appreciated Cheers John Crisp

Andy......are there any diagnostics that can be done to check the voltage etc at the coils or is it a case of buying one and trying it.....300's are like hens teeth round about me so thewre is no chance of trying one from another car.

Andy I forgot to mention the car kicks occasionally but doesnt fire up and it has been in my garage for the last maybee month till i could get some time to work on it. Any time i previously tried to move the car out the garage....no problem every time..it started first turn of the key.

Not something simple like the battery? That is charged, isn't it?

Another stab in the dark but it could even be your immobiliser. Do you have an overide facility (dallas prom etc) to see if it's that before you start looking for something more expensive ?

Cheers guys

The car turns over no probs, well its down a bit now with me trying to start it but the battery/starter is ok.

I am gonna study the manual for a while b4 i burn the car ..oops or the wife throws me out lol . women and cars dont mix i know that.

Konrad I dont think its the immobiliser as the car kicks occasionally like its gonna start, I thought if it was the immobiliser i would get like no electrics to the starter when i am getting the car turning over.

cheers John Crisp

You need to work out if the problem is spark or fuel first..

Spark - easy, take out a coil pack (two bolts), plug a sparkplug into the bottom, ground it against the engine casing (erm, make sure you're not holding the sparkplug with anything uninsulated, obvious but I don't want anyone getting zapped!), and turn the engine over.

If you see a spark, then you have that much, at least..

Fuel - when you switch the ignition to 'on', do you hear the fuel pump prime? You should..

If you want to be dead certain, remove the output hose from the fuel filter, and place something there to catch the fuel - a large coke bottle will do, Then switch the ignition to 'on' and see if it fills the bottle with fuel..

If you are getting fuel, check the injectors;

This is harder but:

Mark the position of the CAS vs. the block with a scribe (or nail), something thin, then unbolt the CAS from the spindle (three small bolts), but leave it connected to the wiring loom.

With the ignition set to 'on', when you turn the CAS spindle, you should hear the injectors click in sequence.

Any of those things fail - then you've narrowed it down a lot..

Can you hear the fuel pump running when you turn the key? Try removing the connectors to the PTU and checking for any crap. One may even have come loose. Also check the CAS connector on the opposing bank to the PTU. I seriously doubt it will be an individual coilpack or injector - the car would deffo start then. The trouble with the ECU diag is that it can't really do much - most of the time it won't even pick up a knackered PTU. It WILL show a bad CAS though.

if you're handy with a multimeter I believe there's some tests you can do for resistance through the PTU - not done them myself so can't really advise...sorry, a search should reveal something though.

Fuel sounds pretty good bet if it's kicking occasionally.

Might be worth joining the AA today (homestart) and having a problem with it tomorrow morning :-P they can check the ignition and fuel for you - even tow it to a garage for you....

Cheers!

I imagine they'd do exactly what I described.. (hold a spark plug against the engine, and put a fuel line into a container..)

At a guess :)

That's about it yep ;-)

Remember not everyone wants to get involved with their engine though....

they have a voltage checker which they attach to the coilpack and will prob disconnect your fuel line and check for flow from the filter...

I never said they were scientists ;-)

Cheers!

AA ? puh...can do that myself. And I love my Z alot more than the AA man does.

but good suggestion if you don't know nuffink about the engine! :p

cheers guys..i just posted to this thread and it got lost lol.

My spark plugs are all soaking wet..i am putting that down to the car not being used and taken out the garage and put back in and have cleaned all the plugs and just now am waiting till the cylinders hopefully dry out.

I tried the 4 easy plugs first then put them back in after cleaning them...the car kicked then nothing so i have cleaned all 6 now and am just about to put them all back in.

Cheers guys for all yer help... John Crisp

OK so you have fuel!!! Or do you mean wet as in water?

Check the PTU connectors for corrosion. Anyone got a spare PTU they can lend John??? PLLLLLEEEEEAAAAAASSSSSSEEEEEE??? ;)

CheerZ,

Andy

Alternatively, get an LED in series with a 1K Ohm (brown+black+red+...!) resistor & place across the injector plug terminals (or the coil plug terminals). Make sure you put it the right way around though. ie. anode to ground. (If you get it the wrong way around, it'll just do F all!)

Turn engine over and check that the LED flashes on & off.

I have a PTU that has Tim's name on it but can send it as long as he sends it on after he's done.

I think its petrol as it isnt green or anything like that , I have noticed the car when started from cold runs at 2000 rpm then drops down so i hope the fault is overfuelling an start up and has flooded the engine stopping a good spark. Am gonna refit all the plugs now.

Cheers john crisp

Erm smell it? lol

TBH a car that is running rich will still start - it just won't run very well ;) You have no spark - otherwise the fuel would be getting burnt off.

Andy
