So I want people's opinions on what oil i should put in my TT Z. I put oil in it 2 years ago and its only done a couple hundred miles, but im installing an oil pressure sensor so oil needs draining and refilling. In the past ive always gone with 5w-40 or 10w-40 of whatever is at the local petrol station but I'd like to be a bit more prepared this time.

I've read through oilman's post about viscosity and synth, but still not sure specific. oilman says synthetic because it gives superior protection than semi, but nissan/Jeff have recommended semi.

Regarding viscosity, the car is mostly sitting and started every couple months for a little drive (nothing major), stock internals with bolt ons and upped boost. Anyone want to recommend something?

Also specific brands better than others?

In summary, semi-synth vs synth, viscosity, and brand?

Unless you’re talking about Jim’s bank 250 miles though wouldn’t even get me home from PowerZed.

It's ok once you get home please change oil for fresh oil [emoji23][emoji23]

500 miles / 4 months shell hx7 10w40 for the summer period only

Winter months oil service every 250 miles/ 2 months

I then switch to Castrol magnatec 10w40 my favourite and the best oil for the z32:drool::thumbup:

This also depends on what mood I'm in also weather dependant plus the year before I only used Castrol magnatec for both 250 and 500 mile oil changes

Right I'll just get my coat I'm off

Talk about throwing money down the drain. (Hopefully not literally).

...and your favourite oil there is an overpriced Mineral oil, neither semi or fully synthetic.

Hi all used oil from Nissan goes into my van when that gets its oil change

Also magnatec is a very good oil for Nissan and a few other performance cars it does the job very well for years, and having owned a 400bhp fd rx7 mineral / semi oil does a good job im sure there's few people on here running mineral oil and changing oil every 1000 miles

Few of my mates are running big power supra / rx7 / evo and use the above oils including triple qx ???

It's all good stuff ?

Mineral oil is advised for rotaries for very different reasons - not sure it's a great idea on other performance cars.

Mineral oil is ok for alot of old Skool cars including Z and has been for years hard to believe but very true ??

One point I would like to clarify to the 300 zx owners here is how to differentiate from the Nissan original engine oil requirement against the present engine requirement. By that I mean there are a whole host of different tunes between members zeds, some light, some mental, some on forged rebuilds and some on original builds with upgrades bolted on and then some just standard.

So it is very important to realise that there us NO single answer to "what oil should I use?" personal preference or experience can be useful but also wrong if you generalise without details. I see some clear winners with oil choice here and also some lesser ones that are getting put down by members with tuned engine`s when they are completely correct for a standard engine.

So start with the favourite and most widely used 10 W40 semi synthetic and use the mass of information on the internet to tailor it to your requirements, I have placed a link below that explains it really well, even for a novice. Read it fully and by understanding the mechanics behind oil and what stage of engine mod you have or not then you can make an educated choice rather than reading "I only use this or that, everything else is pants" kind of reviews.

Another really important consideration is how often and how you drive, this I personally consider to be as import if not more than your actual engine tune, a garage queen rarely used in anger even with high end power mods simply will never benefit from high end blends of oil, better to look at long life oil with anti-corrosion additives and a weight that allows for more surface clinging so that infrequent start does not cause damage after long shut downs.

A daily used in traffic or a daily used on motorway, then short and longs distances, all of these need to be taken into account, and lets be all honest here, not many of us drive on a regular basis like you have stolen it, preferring the odd bit of fun when the opportunity arises, again all needs to be considered, as does where you live, ambient temps etc.

The subject can go on and on and as I mentioned previously, what ever oil you use, regular oil and filter changes is like banking money against engine wear and tear.

Good info on this link, take the time to read and understand....

I still wouldn't use it when there are far better and more advanced oils out there.
