Can anyone help me, please?

I need to change the plate that sits behind the metal loop that the door catch closes on:confused: - sorry about that poor description, don't know a better way to describe it. One of the threads is knackered, by the look of it, has been bodged with a bolt, and so the door doesn't really shut quite properly, meaning that the microswitch in the door, doesn't get, well, switched ;)

The problem is this - I have the part, but how on earth do I get to the back of the door frame to fit it?

Also, I don't have a "door-open" warning light, is it busted, or do they simply not have them on Series 1s?

Any advice much appreciated.

ThankZ,

John.

Hi Mate,

I've been looking around on the net to try and find something to help you out but I couldn't find anything. :(

Is the bit you need to change on the door or in the quarter panel ?

John

Do u not have a manual to look and see how to do it, they aint dear to buy and work in cd form with Acrobat Reader.

Stu,

It's on the back of the door frame ... I guess this is part of the quarter panel. It's effectively behind the front of the rear wheel arch - I know, it's another crap description, but I've had a little too much wine now ... doh!

John C, no, I don't have the adobe manual, but getting this is probably a good idea ...

Cheerz Guys,

John.

In that case the only way to it it via the rear quarter panel by the ABS ECU. :(

Not easy to get to but then the Japanese do have small hands :D.

I recently changed the bushes on my gear stick. so I know what you are going to have to go through. :(.

It's a tight squeeze mate.

Cheers Stuart,

Unfortuately, I have all the coordination and dexterity of a baboon, so I guess it's a mechanic job .... perhaps they'll have some YTS types with small hands:D :D

Thanks for the help, but sounds a bit too much like hard work for me ... didn't think it could be simple, since it came with the new part not fitted!:D

Arse!.

John - it's really not that hard to get the interior trim off at the back.. Basically you'll need a 10mm socket & ratchet, and that's it.

Remove the back seat first - fold the back part of the seat down, then remove the four 10mm bolts that hold it to the hinges, and pull the seat out.

Remove the base of the seat - it simply pulls straight upward, the back is held down with velcro, the front with two clips, one either side.

To remove the rear quarter trim you'll need to remove two 10mm nuts (it's fairly obvious which ones, though there are some that you don't need to remove that only hold a big metal support on - doesn't matter if you remove them, just put them back on when you're done), and one screw that's up the top of the trim just in front of where the boot blind goes - there's a round plastic cover over the hole that you pop out.

Then you just pull toward the centre of the car to disengage the last couple of clips, and there you have it - easy (ish) access to the back of the striker plate.

Or take it to a garage if you're a wuss... :D

Once you have done that you still got to do the hard part and that is squeeze you hand up this gap and try and change the part.

Good luck :p

Aaron/Stuart,

Thanks for the further advice ... looks like I might be able to manage it after all - just looks like a case of scraped sausage fingers. Might give it a go next weekend, then, or perhaps I might be feeling like a wuss!!!:D :D

CheerZ Chaps,

John.

I noticed a problem with the door open warning chime (when lights on) when I was ar*eing up fitting a stereo. I think its on the same fuse as the electric aerial/central locking (the lowest 10A fuse on the left) - I blew the fuse, and the chime stopped (although the lightws were on!). But if your locking is working, then its not going to be this....

Well Stu/Aaron, you're both right.

Aaron, you're spot on, it's a doddle to remove the relevant trim and gain access to the striker plate.

Stuart, you're right about needing small hands though ... it's grazed knuckles time!! Just reminded me why I'm usually a wuss and take the thing to a garage!!

Anyway door catch re-aligned and repaired, so mission was a success! :D :D

CheerZ,

John.

Excellent news mate.

You know that feeling you have now like you have accomplished something ??

That's the reason you don't take it to a garage. You don't get the same feeling when you are handing over the money not knowing what they have done.
