Does the ECU used in the 300zx use a standard EPROM IC?

I have seen references to an 8 bit and a 16 bit ECU (I think it was on the Jim Wolf technologies website), what are the differences. I.e. Does it depend on the year/ destination market.

Would it also depend on the destination market what map was programmed into the ECU. I'm guessing that as the driving conditions (speed restrictions and emmisions) would be different the map would be also.

Also if you perform an ECU upgrade, is the replacement of the EPROM all that is neccessary, or is a daughter board/jumper wire modification required.

Thanks in advance for an information.

This is what I know:

89-94 Z32's have 8bit ECU's and do not have a daughterboard or socket for the EPROM.

To upgrade the EPROM, the original chip has to be removed and a socket needs to be installed.

If you know how to handle a soldering-iron, you can do this yourself...there's not much to it.

late '94 + '95 Z32's have 16bit ECU's, which can not be upgraded.

BUT...in these Z's the older (read: upgradable) type ECU's will fit.

'96+ Z32's also have 16bit ECU's, but these are not upgradable nor can they be replaced with an older type ECU....

However there is a light in the sky for the 96+ Z's...it's called the LINK-ECU.

Hope it helps,

Eric

Ahhhh, Eric, very interesting...thanks for that, answered some of my own there.

What about JWT ECU then, when you buy this is it just a chip or a complete replacement for your existing ECU? Mine is a 1991 UK TT Auto. Coz I've heard some referring to JWT ECU as "an excellent chip", are they just referring to the chip or is this just an expression?

When you buy the upgrade from JWT, you'll have to send your complete ECU to the US and you'll get another (upgraded) one back (together with the stock EPROM that was originally in the ECU)

For every future upgrade you just send the EPROM to JWT and they'll reprogram it. (for $100)

Oh..and when they're referring to the chip they actually mean the EPROM in the ECU.

CheerZ Eric,

So I've just been on Zhome.com reading about diag. modes for the ECU, I take it that when you get the JWT upgrade that you can still run the Nissan ECU checks as normal?

Are you saying that when you send your ECU off to JWT in the US, that what you get back is your ECU but with their chip(s) installed?

Sorry to be so thick on this one, also, you mentioned that for every upgrade you have to have it reprogrammed. So if I am planning on Blitz exhaust and intake etc. I should get the ECU last?

Sorry again to be a pain, thanks Eric.

Tim, you recieve the ECU with the JWT-EPROM installed and the stock EPROM in a little box (for when you want to put the car back to stock)...and I forgot..for the twinturbo-upgrade you'll also get a set of boost-jets (to increase the boost)

The ECU-check still works and the Nissan-consultchecker still works.(although this one will see it's not a stock chip)

The basic JWT upgrade already assumes you have an aftermarket intake + exhaust...but it runs just as good if you haven't got these (yet)

With future upgrades I meant things like bigger injectors, bigger turbo's, dual intake, etc.

Yeah, but Warren, I looked at Mines from the very beginning. I want an ECU that will be best all round for the car, performance and longevity/reliability...not a full on engine f**ker-upper! Know what I'm saying?

Sorry, call me old fashioned, but I'm a one rebuild kinda guy! LOL!
