I haven't used my zed much lately and the last couple of times I've started it, it's run rough for the first mile then it's been fine. I just put this down to damp through lack of use and didn't think much of it.

I tried to start it today and it turns over, but won't start. I can hear the fuel pump priming when I turn the ignition on and

I've got a spark. I removed the cas and turned it by hand and I can hear the injectors firing.

Has anyone got any suggestions ?

You mention you have spark, so I assume you’ve tested a plug in one of the coil packs? (Guessing you would have mentioned if you had pulled a spark plug and it was either fine or fouled)

If you’ve only started it up and used it for short journeys, it could be as simple as fouled plugs. Throw a new set in there (NGK Coppers will set you back all of £15). When you swap them out, have a look how fouled up they are.

If you want a used, but good set of plugs to try , then drop by.

Try connection on maf ,cas might need cleaning

That was the first thing I did when it wouldn't start, I know how bad the connections can end up after a few years.

Thanks for the advice, I did remove a plug to test the spark. They were quite wet with fuel, which I was expected because it was cranking without actually firing, they didn't seem too bad though. I think it's probably worth trying some new plugs to eliminate them.

Thanks for the kind offer, but I'm a bit pushed for time at the moment, so I'll order some and get them delivered.

These are the FSM diagnostics steps (some of which you have done) to work through:

Thanks, I've been following that as best as I can without anyone to turn the key while I'm messing.

I didn't have 12v at the coil pack connectors, so I bypassed the relay which solved that, but it still wouldn't start. I re-tried the relay and I'm now getting 12v. The relay could be faulty, but since I've got a spark and 12v at the coils, I don't think that's a problem at the moment. My only thought now is that maybe the faulty relay caused the initial problem, which fouled the plugs causing it to still not start. I'm probably clutching at straws, but other than that I'm stumped.

To clarify, the coil pack 12 volt supply relay receives s signal to energise from the ecu, in near 20 years in the workshop I can not remember replacing a coil relay but ecu outputs can play up.

Common over fulling issues from bad temp sensor connections will result in flooding and non starts, this is often accompanied by the ac electric fan running with the ignition on, however many if the fan motors have failed and do not run so be aware of that.

So check and clean the temp sensor ( the yellow one in front of the engine ) then pull all of the plugs and dry them, if you can leave the plugs out over night and with the plugs out and the fuel pump fuse removed turn the engine over for 5 second or so with the accelerator flat down, pause and do this again.

Next day or after above if you have to, refit the plugs, refit the fuel pump fuse and crank away but keep your foot off the gas pedal until it catches at the very least, if the non start was from flooding it will start after that, if not then you need to look again at the spark and or the afm, actually faulty mafs can stop an engine starting so be worth disconnecting and trying a start at that point,

Failing all that you would be best advised to get the car hooked up on the a ConZult diagnostic and look for strange readings or any potential error codes.

Good luck

Thanks for the comprehensive reply Jeff. I'll recheck the temperature sensor connector and I've ordered some new plugs. Once they arrive, I'll be able to leave them out overnight and make sure it's not flooded.

Thanks to everyone for their help, especially Jeff and Nick. I finally got the time to look at it. I removed the plugs, left it overnight and put a new set in the next day, it started immediately. The plugs were quite black, which I've put down to my disconnected o2 sensors and using the wrong plugs.

I was running bcr8es which are probably too cold for my OAP driving style. I've replaced them like for like, but I'm going to get some platinums ordered.
