hi guys i need urgent advice

my clutch has been slipping for some time now so i got a rps clutch from smithy and got it fitted free of charge under warranty so i picked the car up this morning with the new clutch fitted.

so ive jumped in the car the clutch pedal felt better than before and nice smooth changes so ive let the car warm up on the way home and then i was driving at about 3000rpm in 3rd and floored it and the clutch slipped just as bad as it did before.

the dealer has refused to have anything more to do with it saying my clutch is faulty or that my clutch will bed in if i keep flooring it which doesnt sound like good advice to me.

any ideas guys?

thanks in advance

Paul

The clutch does have to wear in though, but it may just be you need to adjust the clutch pedal.

if it makes a difference the biting point was about half way down and with the new clutch its now about 3 quarters of the way down

oh and i also noticed a small dent in the wing but it seems fairy's must have done that:mad:

I think I have the same clutch as you, and when it was first installed bite point was right at the bottom, you hardly had to lift it before it bit. Now its nicely in the middle so I think it will get better. But I have been told dont floor it with a new clutch cos it needes time to bed in.

Did you have your flywheel skimmed? Cos that could probably help it and probably contributing to it slipping because the 2 plates are not in complete contact with eachother.

Dont floor it for a few hundred miles and then have another go.

As for the dent in the wing, fairies have a habbit of doing that, so I am told anyway. Im lucky enough to not have anything like that done to my car, but I have known other people's car having a run in with fairies.

i never had the flywheel skimmed i never knew you had to do that.

a garage that i use said that the chimps that were working on it have probaly had thier oilly paws all over the clutch could this make it worse and if so will the oil burn off the clutch

thanks again

You dont have to have it skimmed but its better to have it done. And yes there may be oil and grease on it from the mechanics hands.

Leave it for a few hundred miles then have a go at flooring it. Keep an eye on the clutch fluid level can it may go down a little as it beds in. You dont want it going dry and getting air bubbles in it,.

Erm, doesn't sound right to me at all tbh. Did they replace the rear main seal while they were there? A leaky rear main could have been the cause of your last clutch slipping. If it leaks onto your new clutch its time to bin it :( If they did get oil on the friction surfaces, they want shooting - you must always clean the surfaces b4 assembly. Are there any signs of oil leakage between the gearbox and the block underneath the car?

CheerZ,

Andy

i have parked it up for the day now and will check in the morning for any oil leaks it doesnt look good though cause its now slipping in all gears:(

Andy, one thing Paul forgot to mention there was, whilst the clutch was slipping it would then suddenly just bite and be okay, strange !! could this now look more like your thoughts above ? as i suggested to him the plate must have been contaminated with oil whilst being fitted.

smithy

I got the same clutch as well, had no problems fitting and was a very nice bite from the start. (tho i fitted a new flywheel at the same time)

you're not producing extremely high bhp are you? just a thought.

if the bite point is very low then it doesnt sound like an adjustment problem. if the flywheel was badly worn then it wouldnt help. the friction material is quite hard on the RPS so i would have thought it may take a bit longer to bed in if it is uneven, is it getting better or worse??

if they have contaminated the plate with grease then they want shooting! but to be honest they would have had to put quite a bit on & not just a little from their grubby mits to be that bad.

just 1 other thought - they *have* actually replaced the clutch & not just adjusted the pedal in hope that it would cure it?!?! does it look like the box has been out??

i now have no pedal and cant get any gears

the car is going to another garage tomorrow to get the gearbox taken off and see what damage they have done

the power of the car is only 280.7 at the wheels

thanks again for the help guys:cool:

No pedal??? Is the clutch slipping fully now or is it permanently engaged??? Before they take the box off maybe they should check the master/slave cylinders are operating correctly. Are there any oily smells when it slips? I hope they did the clutch cover plate up properly

CheerZ,

Andy

no oily smells and i didnt take the car out properly cause i dont want to cause any more damage to it

but tomorrow night ive to drop it in to get fixed by a guy who knows what he's doing:) he owns a 400bhp skyline gts-t the only reason i never used this guy in the first place was cause its still under warranty
