Came up the stairs few days ago to notice the ceiling all brownish and bubbly. Ah! must be a leek, up i go in the loft to find a sodden pile of loft insulation under a water pipe. looking further i find the hole in the pipe. i put one of our dogs metal bowls under it to catch any further drops. a few days later i check it for any leak and funnily enough there is no leakage in the bowl. Never mind. Yesterday i go up to check it and as i touch the bowl "POW"!! F**K ME 240 volts straight through my fingers!!. To cut the story short, i get one of my many MultiMeters i have and go up and test the bowl ... 240V...the plaster board ceiling... 230V I jump Downstairs and test the Ceiling in the Bathroom,Toilet and Hall... Blilmey!! all showing major voltages... Ringing a building services place later on but this is a weird one...

Possibly wet ceiling conducting through the the first floor lighting circuit. No RCD protection on the consumer unit I assum? Isolate first floor lighting now and test again mate.

Turns out when the house was rewired a live wire in the landing light switch was nicked and then pressed against the earth , livening up the metal conduit in the wall, after the leak had made its way to the wall it then livens up the wall, ceiling dog bowl, you name it. all is well now but a lucky escape all round
