Guys

The speedo on my 300zx seems to be malfunctioning and isn't displaying the correct speed e.g on my way to work this morning was showing 140! Now it is showing 180! I knew they were quick back in the day but doing 180 while stood is amazing for any car!

Could it be the cluster or a sensor of some sort?

Thanks in advance

What spec is your Zed JDM or UK?

If it's JDM has the speedo been converted to rum in mph ? if so the chip could be faulty or it could be the speed sensor on the gearbox

Sorry should have said earlier it's a uk car

I took the cluster out last night and pulled the speedo needle back to 0 manually then took it for a drive and it came on after 25mph but was jumping then was ok then not registering etc so I am thinking more and more it may be the cluster

What do you mean you pulled it back ?

At idle was it doing 180 ?, also has the needle every been removed ?

I opened the cluster up and pulled the speedo needle back to 0 as it was stuck on 180 - it wasnt moving at all just sat at 180. Not sure if the needle has ever been removed as I have only owned the car for 3 weeks.

So when you start the car does it jump to the other side of 180 ?

Has this just started happening or are these clocks replacements for another set.

May be a good idea to borrow a set of clocks off someone if you can and test, at least that will tell you

if its either a faulty speed sensor on the gearbox, bad cable if it still happens and if it doesn't happen

after a clock swap then its likely a dry joint on one of the parts of the clock.

At the moment the speedo is sat on 0 as i moved it back yesterday and will work occasionally.

The problem has just started occurring - not sure if it has always been there historically as like i say ive only just bought the car.

Thanks for that Jeff

Out of curiosity is zedworld still open? I used to bring my silver TT there around 2008 then I sold it to my mate Andy who brought it there before wrapping it up

I am sure he sold it as spares or repairs to zedworld in 2010

Thanks for that Jeff

Yes after many successful years I closed Zedworld a couple of years ago to semi retire in sunny Portugal ..... but still float around here.

Is there a website for his garage?

  • 1 month later...

Hi Adam,

Sorry that you're having trouble with the speedo. I had trouble with it a few months before you bought it, but I managed to fix it (or so I thought...) by resoldering all the joints on the back of it. It did work fine again after that! But that's gutting if it's gone again, I'm really sorry! Anyway, I'm pretty sure, based on that experience, that it's the speedo itself at fault, as opposed to the gearbox sender. Maybe my resoldering of the bad joint (none of them were visibly bad) was a bad resoldering... Maybe worth trying it again... if you had the time...

Hi phill

Thanks for the info

Luckily enough I manage to source a set of uk manual TT clocks and replaced them a few weeks back. It has sorted the problem so hope these work fine now as they are hard to find!

Only issue now is I need to sort the mileage out as these clocks are on 90 and the car has done more. Apart from that I have had to change the water pump as it was leaking but no other issues and car is running well.

If you remove the cluster again you can either change over the odometer as one or its is simple to change the mileage on the UK one.
