Aerodynamics!!

I was wondering what effect any rear spoilers have on the aerodynamics of the Z?

Is it best to try and stick with the original, remove it completely,or put any one of the numerous aftermarket ones on?

Has any research been done into this or is it just a case of" I'll have that spoiler because I think it looks nice"?

Cheers,

F.T.

This even sounds silly to me but!! i had my spoiler off, as it was at the paint shop but was still using the car, i dropped a friend to pick his car up after a night on the town and he was goading me on the way back to put my foot down which i did, and at high speed i swear the car felt less stable than normal, the conditions were good, summer etc no wind to speak of but everyone ive told grinned at me like i was dopey, never mind eh i think that it does make a difference.

p.s. when i say high speed i mean speeds around 63 mph honest officer

Stillen at least claim to do wind tunnel tests to ensure their spoilers are functional.

I've certainly got more downforce since I put their type 3 wing put on; we're going round corners quicker anyway !! :D

As for looking nice..... :D

What sort of prices are these spoilers?

Are Stillen the best?

F.T.

I think the spoilers definetly do their jobs but only really at high speed. The bigger the better i suppose.

Ive had an evo and a porsche 911 and at high speed they really did feel stable, especially after putting a turbo spoiler on the 911.

Stillen do look great; and they are the only ones I've heard of that claim to do wind tunnel tests, but I don't know of any uk dealers that supply them.

I got mine direct from Stillen, for about £180 + about £40 postage I think, but then got REALLY stung by customs and excise for another £130 !!!!

Another warning if you want to buy Stillen. What they (Yanks) call a coupe is the 2 seater so if you do buy one from them make sure you state it's 2+2. My type 3 wing is only listed to fit 2 seaters but it just requires some modding where the strakes meet the shoulders of your z; then it fits great !

:D

Worth having a look at zcentre.co.uk as Luke's got pictures of loads of spoilers that he sells.

Thanks chaps,I'll have a look at those only I didn't want to spend that much Konrad!!

Cheers,

F.T.

I didn't plan to

HM Customs & Excise had other ideas though !

Still, at least it saved me having to decide what to spend my spare money on ! :p

Don’t forget the larger the rear wing the more drag you get so it will slow your car down but it should be out- weighed by more grip and stability at speed.

all the best Sid.

It could also marginally increase your fuel consumption, but then I guess if you're that worried about fuel then you'd be driving a Robin Reliant rather than a Z, eh ? ;)

Strosek were the only manufacturer to wind tunnel test their entire kit - most other aftermarket kits ( inc Spoliers ) have not been wind tunnel tested and any effect they have on the drag / downforce of the car are more that likely coincidental.

The stock Z Spoiler is just about the best at doing it's job thru the overall performance range of the car - only go aftermarket if you like the looks or want something that does a specific job !

No arguments about Strosek; they nearly got to make kits for Nissan after all, but Stillen wind tested their spoilers too !

Plus, Strosek designed their wing to go with their extended wheel arches (although Luke Borg sells a low level version of it!)

Have you not read about the Stillen SMZ ?

It was even featured in the Z club of GB's magazine a couple of years back under the title of 'Epitome Awesome' !

They took a shipment of the last 300's to be made and kitted 'em up in association with Nissan. They wouldn't have got away with no testing.

And mine not only works a treat but doesn't crack in the sun and leak like the OE wing !

Is there any info of the results of the tests, or documentation? Would make for a good read.

I should think the stock spoiler does do a good job of increasing downforce ... after all, it weighs in at about half a ton LOL!!:D :D
