My Zed arrived off the boat from Japan with a mysterious black box in the drivers footwell. Turns out it's a turbo timer, which is something I'll never use as I always idle for a minute or two before turning off and there's no way I'd leave the car unattended with the engine on. I got a Thatcham immobiliser fitted on import so I don't even know if it can work as the fuel pump should be cut out when that engages.

Is there an easy way to remove the thing? I haven't investigated all the wiring behind it so I have no idea what it connects to.

Thanks

I set mine to about 10 seconds but yes I know the annoyance when it runs with a cat 1 alarm :)

usually plugs in to the ignition inside the steering column plastic iirc

I cant remember to be honest im thinking Blitz or something similar, there is also a wire going to the handbrake

What make/model is it?

Good question! I'm away at the mo but will take a look when I get back. I don't recall a model number on it but if there isn't one I'll post a photo.

depends on make, but it may just have a plug in loom on the back of the ignition barrel

That's kind of what I'm hoping for, thanks. I'd like to get rid of the thing so there's one less thing for the insurance companies to charge extra for! I'm away now till next weekend but will get under the dash as soon as I get back.

Finally got home and have had a squint under the dash. It appears to be a Greddy box. There is a plate on the side with a label on saying GTT2 24817. Not sure how many cables going into the back they're hidden in a shroud. Does that help?

So if it's got the harness in do I just need to disconnect the 4-pin plug that goes to the box, or remove all the patch cables too?

Rip out that junk! Turbo Timers are twaddle. You're best off just cruising off-boost the last few miles of your journey. A far better and more efficient way of making sure your turbos aren't sat in burning oil.

Never seen the point of them to be honest.

So if it's got the harness in do I just need to disconnect the 4-pin plug that goes to the box, or remove all the patch cables too?

Have a look and see what was done. Greddy listed a specific harness for the 300ZX:

Finally had time to take a look today. Looks like the patch loom is in there but it's going to take removal of several dashboard/column panels to get it out. However I got enough wiring out to just unplug the timer box, and after removing that everything works as normal so the loom obviously connects the box in parallel with the ignition wiring rather than in series. So just unplugging 2 connectors and tidying the wiring away has sorted it!

Thanks for your help everyone!
