What's everyone's views on Community CCTV ?

I've had cctv for a long time now but I've just got my hands one two Hikvision 12MP Fish Eye cameras that I've dually installed.

Now I say community as they pick up a lot more than just my driveway or front door and the people so far that know they are there have welcomed them.

Below is an expanded view :

But this is how the camera sees the world :

My tuppence worth.... I think it's a shame that we need, and often rely on, CCTV in today's society:sad:

However it certainly can prove invaluable, should the need arise. Hence I'd say it's better than any alarm system etc. - to the point that I'd also consider a sign to say that CCTV is in use. Just as a further deterrent, to reduce the likelihood of anything untoward happening in the first place.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Agreed,

There has been so many hit and runs on our street aswell as vandalism.

Just tonight the wife found someones dogs dirt bag pushed into our hedge, unfortunately I was a victim of my own technology

in that I had the setting up too high and ended up with too much footage to search though.

I did find a couple of boys throw a rock at the neighbours caravan then scarper after they did it.

I think CCTV is good, not only can it deter someone from doing stuff, can help when things happen.

Always good to have when you need proof of wrong doings. The camara never lies.

According to results found by Scotland Yard published in the Telegraph upto 80% of CCTV evidence is useless for prosecution, in fact for every 1000 cameras you solve one case. The camera can lie, very well actually but the real issue is it promptes a false sense of certainty. For example the accused may have been wearing a blue top and have brown hair, cctv shows a person in blue with dark hair, suddenly this is evidence. Or is it just a person in a blue top, you see my point. In fact the majority of witness testimonies are questionable as the vast majority of us are just too suggestible and will "remember" things all to readily.

CCTV does have its uses but they aren't as far reaching as many think. I wouldn't advocate its abolition, far from it but I'd be a bit pissed off if my neighbors threw up a camera that overlooked my property etc.

Hi I have experience of using cameras and upgrading systems over many years now and have them installed on my property (I am not a CCTV business, not trying to sell anything) . I have also submitted evidence to the police twice successfully one leading to a prosecution about incidents including theft from my property and also a burgalar breaking in to my elderly neighbours home. In short thieves these days will just cover up and not take much notice of a camera if they are going after home invasion to get your keys/ car. It is unlikely an opportunist thief will do this they will move on to an easier target because by the time they see any opportunity tey may have been caught on camera.

I believe having floodlights that turn on when someone enters your property is still a far better deterrent. What cameras are good for is establishing the timeframe for events, in the csase of my neighbour they were elderly and believed the time of their problem was actually nearly 1 hour different to when it actually took place. Overall I recommend really high quality cameras that will be able to pickup a license plate and features at a reasonable distance, most will not.

I get the mickey taken out of me a lot by colleagues but I currently have a speed dome fitted with auto tracking and zoom so if someone enters my border and then leaves it follows them and zooms in, especially good for those chancers that come in a vehicle and park it down the street to avoid detection. Sure it picks up the postman but where I am generally whoever is coming on my property they will be for a reason and its pretty quiet. I have spoken to all my neighbours who are fine with it, I think thats an important point too, if people understand that whilst a portion of the coverage will be outside of your property that it will not be getting recorded or viewed unless a trigger event takes place from my property. I have signs up that are clear and compliant so all should be fine.

If anything for the future I would have it so people cant tell there are cameras there so the offenders dont cover up. With a good system you can save yourself no end of trouble, I have even argued the toss successfully with delivery companies trying to make out that their drivers came and there was nobody in when I have proof that nobody came.

I no longer have property overseas but if I did I would also use a system to remotely monitor and be able to respond to callers for sure, inexpensive these days and worth the piece of mind. Also think of when you have work done on your property, tradesmen that may want to try cutting corners may think twice knowing that ther work and behaviour on your land at least on the outside of the property can be reviewed.

Overally I have heard some really bad tales recently about home invasion which is on the rise and the only solution I would have for that is get a big dog and a gate on your stairs (not common in the UK bt they work) to give you time to react if someone is intent in breaking in and getting to you to steal and use violence.

I live in a quite low crime area thankfully but crime still happens and these organisaed criminals move around to find easy targets. Sadly having a nice car on the drive or spotted in the garage attracts attention.
