So, I'll probably regret this but what the hey!!

Just home from a 600 km round trip to go fetch this:innocent::whistling:

1989 Factory manual TT SWB!!

It's missing a few bits and has some rust, also has a "Noddy and Big Ears" themed engine bay:scared::thumbdown:

IMG_5425.jpg

Was running before it had its gearbox, diff, drive shafts, brakes and exhaust stripped off it:whistling:

Needs a bonnet, new trims, and some paint and bodywork, but it'll be a work in progress.

Have to wait and see how I get on, figured I have a fair few spare bits from the other car lying around, so might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb!! :thumbup1:probably struggle with it but at least it'll keep me occupied for a bit:thumbup:

Finally managed to source a second 8 pot AMG caliper :punk:

  • Author
Are those calipers handed L/R?

Yeah Andrew, managed to get one a couple of months ago, had awful trouble sourcing the O/S/F without paying crazy money in the US. Found one in Poland two weeks ago and it's on route since Thursday:thumbup:

Without knowing which car your AMG calipers came off (leading or trailing caliper mounting) and assuming the calipers

have differential bore pistons then this AP Racing info may be useful to you:

"Discs must always pass the small piston first on differential bore calipers"

Thanks Andrew, my caliper is currently on a van on it's way here, Yeah, they trail on the Sl55 AMG. I'll be flipping left to right and vice versa. I can switch the bleed valves and crossover pipes to put the small pistons top:thumbup:

Have the rebuild kits ordered since last week:yes:

Will be pulling these and my other set of 4 piston rears apart in the coming days, then they’re off for powder coating

Rooted out the full kit:clap:

These will be going on the blue Z, they’re only on this build thread so I can test fit with wheels, clearances etc :thumbup1:

Ha!!! I work best under pressure guys:whistling::yes: The AMG's are fully stripped out (Pistons, seals and dust boots all removed) I'll see how I fare with the other 2 but I've a Mortgage manager calling in 1hr 20 mins and this place has to be spotless:scared::lol:

Size isn't everything you know mate.

Ha!! Just had good / bad news from the Mortgage Manager, Can get the Big House if I clear off one debt:scared:

She mentioned maybe selling a car to clear it :scared:

Thanks be to Jaysus Jo (The Boss) was in work:whistling:

Told her I’d rather go on the game than part with my Z’s and their goodies:laugh:

I’ll sort something out:whistling: I always do:innocent:

So after a lot of swearing and hardship, I’ve finally got the crossover tubes and bleed valves switched around:whistling:

The issue now is that there was a groove in the crossover end which is not on the new end, I called over to my machine shop and they’re going to machine out the other end to match:thumbup:

Won’t get them back for a couple of weeks as the main guy is on holidays till 11-04, :scared:

Here’s a few pics of what I’m getting at

This end originally had the crossover tube, you can see the groove it sat into..

Now here is the opposite end where the crossover tubes now have to go, to have the small caliper piston leading..

My machine guy has looked and reckons the two ends were originally the same and then machined to match whichever side was required.

Instead of swapping the sides the crossover tubes are on can you not just swap the callipers right to left? They would be opposite sides as come from the factory but can't be too many differences running on opposite sides.

Its to do with the calipers being behind the wheel instead of infront of it as it would be on a z. Different size pistons dictate its orientation

Ah thought they were symmetrical. I saw that above and they had to be different orientation leading Vs trailing but didn't put it down to piston design.

Personally i would just swap the calipers left to right keeping the bleed valves at the top, i doubt the fact that the small piston wouldnt be leading makes any dufference considering the MC is probably totally wrong for these calipers.

I would imagine the merc these calipers are from had SBC.

Spot on Chris, the only way to have the small piston leading is to flip them around / upside down. :thumbup1:

Sensotronic Brake Control still has a hydraulic master cylinder for if it ever fails, reports have been favorable with both Supra, G35 and GTR owners who are all running the AMG with the BM57 master cylinder :thumbup1:

The reason for differential bore calipers is succinctly described here in the SCC Project 300ZX:

http://www.superstreetonline.com/how-to/project-car/9902scc-project-nissan-300zx-part-3/

"The pistons are all of different sizes, with the small pistons (which exert less force) at the leading edge

of the brake pad, and the larger pistons at the trailing edge. This eliminates taper wear, a problem that

all multi-piston calipers have.

Taper wear happens because of the self-energizing action of the brake pads on a rotating rotor. The leading

edge of the pad tends to get wedged by the rotor, thus receiving a higher per-unit load than the trailing edge.

The pad starts to wear more at the leading edge, creating a wedge shape that makes the problem worse.

By making the leading pistons smaller than the trailing pistons, more force is applied to the rear of the pad

than the front. This does two things; it eliminates taper wear and it also improves braking by evenly distributing

the braking pressure over the surface of the pads."

Rooted out my UK spec series 1 clocks and got to work cleaning them up, they had no Perspex cover for the last 20 years, so I had to give them a good scrub :thumbup1:

I’ve ordered some 501 led bulbs to fit into them and then they’re going into the red car along with a perfect condition binnacle.

The reset push is broken so I’ll be stripping out one of my old sets of clocks
