Hi all,

Have a coolant leak behind engine. I can see where its from, its from a 1/4 inch metal pipe that goes through a 90 degree bend and joins a 1/2 inch metal pipe. Its underneath the two electrical connectors that unclip, about 5 inches below. Theres a pin hole right on the 90 degree elbow.

Didnt leak to start with, but had idling on the drive for 10 minutes, switched it off and water was spurting out. I can see on the 1/4 inch side it goes into a rubber hose, so thats easy to come off. However the 1/2 inch pipe dissapears, one side to behind drivers side head, the other side disapears down towards the ground.

Question I have is how easy is it to replace this hose? I've done some searching, and think the 1/4 inch pipe is a turbo coolant hose? I couldnt find any useful info on how to replace though. Anyone able to offer some guidance?

I will try and post a photo if I can, its been a while since I've posted on a forum, do I still need to use photobucket or similar?

Thanks in advance for any help given!

Heater matrix Pipe

Down there you have the 2 thick hard pipes about 20mm in diameter, these are the heater core flow and return. Then there are spurs from here about 10mm that create a loop that feed the turbos and underside of the plenum with engine coolant.

Replacing that hard pipe is possible with one side easier than the other but it's cut knuckle paradise. I remember having the same issue many years ago, I used long pliers and extensions to get at it and replace the offending piece. If I were to do it now I'd remove the upper portion of the plenum and do some preventive work, replace all that hose and delete the plenum water feed. Up to you how you feel.

Ideal, thanks! Yes that's the one, its on the passenger side so luckily looks the easier to fix. Had another look at it this morning and agree it looks like it'd be much easier with upper plenum out the way. Have been having injector issues as well so probably time to get them sorted properly now as well.

Been studying youtube, looks to be a manageable job.

Am glad it wasn't the other hose though on the drivers side, that looks like a pig to get to!

One last question... where would you guys recommend I get the pipe from? I can see it advertised on concept z, but is there a UK supplier (other than dealer?). Oh, also what other bits would you recommend I do while I'm there?

No need to remove the plenum, undo the cable loom and tie it back out of your way, then a long extension will reach down.

We wise though if you've got the time? Get rid of the crap and do the cam covers now rather than later...

Finally managed to get the pipe off... found it easiest to get to it by taking the battery out and going in through the side. Hardest bit was getting the horizontal bolt off that holds it to the block - that's going to be fun to get back on without dropping it! That plus trying to get the hoses off that probably haven't moved for 24 years.

If anyone else needs to do this in future, invest in some very long - long nose pliers and a long 12mm spanner for the horizontal bolt before you start, saves lots of cut knuckles.

Now just need to fix/replace the pipe so I can enjoy the car in the sun again!
