As above really, just curious as to the main function/functions of the PTU.

Is its main and only function the distribution of the power to the individual coil pack? or does it influence more than just this?

Just asking, as I have recently discovered the bottom connection quite corroded, and have since cleaned all male and female connectors and re fitted.

Could I anticipate any subtle difference in performance or daily driving etc for example?

I think you will find that's not quite right Ali, that is the function of the coil. Each cylinder has its own coil, as apposed to the old style single coil and HT leads which is less efficient.

I did think that but j thought they acted in conjunction with each other. Does it do something different?

What also led me to believe that is that the output wires from the put are a thicker gauge than the input to carry the higher voltage/current?

No idea why that's the case, it's just a box of relays that sends power to each coil pack. The ECU decides the firing time via the CAS. They are sometimes called ignition chips. Notice there's 4 cables coming in and six out.

As far as I understand it yeah, it's basically a low voltage electrical version of a distributor, sort of. Powering up the coil packs when called for like the rotor arm in a dizzy. If the connections are poor you may experience poor running as the signal and supply are not as strong as they should be to the PTU or Coils, depending on the side that's dirty. Ultimately and mine did this last winter, you can loose a cylinder or complete loss of spark if the connections are poor.

Very similar to when the distributor in an old car gets all mucky or wet.

PTUs are basically six power transistors in a box. They provide the interface between the ECU and ignition coils to handle

the higher current (amps) load required by the coils to work.

Thanks for the feed back everyone, it's good to understand how thing works and how they affect the running of the Zed.

To be honest, my question was prompted by my journey home from work the other afternoon having cleaned the connector.

In brief, I did let her have her head once in second gear and the rear wheels lit up! Something that has never happened before.

Surprised me really.

Weather wise, warm, dry and sunny.

Tyres, up to pressure and Good tread.

Road surface, dry and grippy.

Just coincidence I guess.
