groover Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 I nearly shat myself, i was settled down watching some tele and and almighty whoosh came from across the room :scared: Nearly one whole side of the fish tank (60litres) come apart and water pissed out all over the bloody carpet. Luckily i had an empty bucket in the kitchen and managed to hold the join together to stop it leaking with some good ole gaffa tape. Emptied enough water out to relive the pressure on the glass into the bucket with a syphon. Im going to source another tank in the morning to transfer the fish until i reseal mine and probably sell as i doubt i can trust it again lol. Anyway thats how my Saturday night panned out, not the kind of pissed i was looking at but hey ho  Quote
toolboxtrev Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Could Ave been worse mate if you had went to bed and come down in the morning and the fish were reading your newspapers lol. Least you caught it before substantial damage done.. Quote
Stephen Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 With 500L of salt water spinning around this is my nightmare lol. Quote
SteveE Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Mmm! Sounds like a fishy tale to me. Lol! Quote
Gaz 300 Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 A new tank and carpet needed then Graham will the house insurance pay out for that mate? Quote
groover Posted October 16, 2016 Author Posted October 16, 2016 New tank arriving this afternoon, i have a carpet cleaner to clean the few square feet that got wet, luckily i managed to push the corners together to stem the water, lost about 2 litres to the floor, but it sounded worse lol 500L Stephen, i would be putting some metal banding around that baby  Quote
phutumsch Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Sad news herring about this Graham, cod of been a lot worse i guess, bet you feel a bit of a pollock not having the banding in the first place . Anyhow, if you need some mussel with that 500L tank let me know and also if you want a lift throwing the old one trout :tongue_smilie:. Quote
phutumsch Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Oh the puns lol. Sure eel feel better once he gets the new one. Quote
Terry Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 I have 500l tank has well so there is 500kg of water in there if it goes would be a mess lol... Quote
spiff Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 I used to have a 300liter piranha tank, I always dreaded a leak. That much water surely would have ****ed up my living room, and my neighbors. And then there's the minor inconvenience of having 5 redbellies flapping around with razor teeth... Quote
Stephen Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 I had a line split on mine, prffft 8 years ago. It was on the first floor at this time, I lost about 100L of water, sal****er. If you don't know salt water doesn't dry like fresh, the salt residue collects damp and it's a nightmare to dry out. Some of it came through the ceiling and made a big mess, the rest vanished. Must of gone down the cavity or something. Anyway I realised at this point it had damaged the stand too. Sweaty stuff, I was worried about the tank ending up downstairs the fast way at that point. We've moved house now and it took 16 hours to move the Reef between the two houses but it now has its own room with a convreate floor and a stand made of 40mm box section, string as an Ox. Quote
groover Posted October 16, 2016 Author Posted October 16, 2016 Nice puns Andy lol, new tank installed and fish swapped over, had to try and keep most of the old fish tank water, so i dont have to cycle the new water which can take weeks, they seem happy in their new home, just have to deep clean the carpet now as it will stink of dank fish water :tt2: Would love a bigger tank, but being lazy i cant be arsed with all the regular cleaning. As an experiment i didnt vac it out for nearly a year, just topped up with water as necessary and cleaned the pump and filters regularly and with several shrimps in there the water was crystal :thumbup1: Quote
Stephen Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 As long as the filter media and substrate were kept wet and not cleaned with tap water or anything silly it's unlikely you will need to recycle. What you need to watch for is phosphates now, they accumulate in the substrate, distruption of a bed that's been sat will often unleash them. Easily solved though with a Ferric or Aluminium Oxide based binder, available in all fish shops. Quote
groover Posted October 16, 2016 Author Posted October 16, 2016 I actually strained the gravel and washed it in the old fish tank water left over, so it will have the same composition as before but without all the crap attached to it. I have some PH testers, will give them a go over the next couple of days, the fish are pretty hardy so im pretty sure they will be ok. Quote
Stephen Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Fingers crossed the filter keeps up, Ammonia is your current risk. Enough ammonia will kill anything. If you get though the next 48 hours ok I'd consider yourself home though tbf. Quote
spiff Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Bigger tanks are often easier to keep than smaller ones as because of the bigger ecosystem they tend to take care of them self and arent as sensitive to changes as smaller tanks. Hmm, all this fish talk is making me want a tank again Quote
Bones28 Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 I have a 4ft x 4ft x 4ft fish tank in garage on a pallet, not been used for 7years should really get rid one day. Quote 2002 Porsche C2 996 3.6 1991 Nissan 300zx TT Project 1995 Nissan 300zx TT Crashed 🥲 1997 Jaguar XK8 Scraped ☹️
