Guys,

I was driving along at 40 mph when I heard this god awful screeching noise cominf from the front of the engine....it then died to nothing....but when I pulled up outside my house (about 200 yards after the noise) I could hear a faint grinding noise and when I lifted the bonnet I was greeted by lots and lots of smoke.....I checked the source and it came from.....(imagine you are looking into the engine from front above Fan) The wheel under and to the left of the fan was smoking, wasn't the belt...it was coming from the back of the wheel the belt was attached to, I don't know what that is or what it does and I hope to god that it's not MAJOR surgery for my Z...

Any Idea's?

Please help this desperate man.....

:-o

Sorry to hear your predicament but ill try & help.

Looking into the Front of the engine bottom right is the Air con compressor, Check the belt is still on or that the pulley wheel isnt loose. Is it smoke or steam coming out the engine compartment, Look for Leaks of fluid around the engine or on the floor.

Timmy,

Belts are still attached and the smoke was coming from behind the fly wheel, It sounded like the bearings siezed of somthing...wierd sound......Really high pitch whine which went to a grined then stopped I travelled about 200 yards to my house and then heard the grinding noise again (Even at idle it stayed the same) stopped the engine and lifted the bonnet to find the smoke.... frown.gif

Beamer,

It was definately smoke, I watched it by torch light for 20 mins..... frown.gif

I don't want to start up the engine incase I do more damage but the noise didn't get any less when I was idle or if I touched accelerator (which was quick just to see!)

I will call out the out the 'Men In Yellow' first thing.

Cheers Guys!!

Matty.

Belts are still attached but the smell is still there, smells like burnt metal (if you know what I mean) I reckon the fly wheel on the right of the fan has siezed, Any idea what that does?

I would use the manual but I have no idea what to search for!!

Matty.

I just found something on the Manual, I am going by the pictures, And from what I can word out it looks like the crank shaft pulley (well that's what the picture looks like!!)

What do you guy's think?

Matt

On the diagram you picked out from the manual,The pulley at the top extreme right is the Cam shaft pulley which sits behind the Crank angle sensor.

matt

re tha diagram you posted the pulley below the cam pulley on the right is the cam belt idler pulley which rotates with the belt and keeps it under tension it could be the bearings are seizing what mileage has the engine done.

Beamer,

I am not sure now looking thru all the other diagrams, the one it most could be is the 'Exhuast Cam Shaft Sproket' but then again it might not be....But that wheel is exactly the one where the smoke was coming from...Diagram;

Is the diagnosis bad for my Z.....???

How much?

Matt

Check your E Mail

It sounds like either your aircon-pump or the waterpump has seized.... you were still able to drive/start the car ?

Remeber that you can not see the sprockets that are on the diagrams..they are behind the black plastic covers.

They aren't driven by the acc. belts either (only by the timingbelt)

-Eric

Yay....

Eric, Your right and Mike has sorted my problem out I got under the bonnet with him at the other end of the phone and cut my Air-Con Compressor belt....Job done!

I just need a new Air-Con Compressor as mine has siezed.

How much am I looking at for a new one?

I'd just like to Say a MASSIVE thankyou to Mike for taking the time to help me out of what I thought was a MAJOR problem....still bad I know but at least I can drive my Z now, I will just have to put the window down for cool air for a bit smile.gif

Hi Matty!

The geeZer who was the previous owner of my (disasterous) shed of dread Zed has (or had) an aircon pump for sale.

He said he would let me have it for £75 uk squids.

Trouble is I scribbled his number down on the logbook for the car - and I returned the car to the dealer along with logbook.

All I know is he lives in Hereford.

What I will do is try and get his number from somewhere when I wrack my brains an remember his name and address (too late to do that tonite after the weekend i have had)

Let me know if you want the pump and I will personally (try my best to) put u in contact with him.

£75 is a good price too - he reckoned they cost £800 odd

RegardZ

Glen
