Hello!

 

So today I am investigating my decat install and wondering how on earth this works... I have the car lifted on stands and have been checking out teh bolts. I have a japspeed style decat pipe to try out.

It is stupidly tight in there so I am probably going to fail at this, but will giev it a shot...

 

My bolts all look pretty rusted, but I will try and save them with some WD-40 and a wire brush. These bolts appear to be fixed into the elbow pipe, in that there isn't a bolt head that I can feel, is that right? So it is just a case of releasing and working on the nut and thread?

If you are referring to the bolts protruding from the turbo elbow, you are correct, they are studs.

I think the nuts are 14mm if memory serves me right.

I would recommend using plus gas and soaking over night, also, I used a impact socket for added strength and purchase.

The last thing you need is to round the nuts off.

Right you are. I will give it a shot with some unlocking fluis from halfords soaked overnight, and then a torque wrench...

Now, what happens if the studs are too rusted up and don't have any thread left?... Is it likely that undoing them will put enough thread back on it to then put new bolts on? Or to I need to look at gettign new studs? Is that even possible?

I would go with a standard 3/8 drive ratchet with extensions topped with a impact socket for added strength.

Ohh I see so you didn't actually use and impact wrench! fair enough. I have a the ratchet wrench so will just pick up some decent 6 sided impact sockets

A good quality 3/8" socket set is what you need for the top ones and a ring spanner for the bottom ones.

I soaked mine but still snapped all 6 studs straight off. I was replacing them for split downpipes so didn't give a F*** but if you need to keep them then you should be careful. And a propane torch probably isn't a bad idea

Guessing your referring to the three bolt flange on the elbow to cat sections. Only 4 on each turbo.

Yeah I am working on the elbow flange too. I am armed with a variety of products to try and release these nuts now.

 

So if I snap these off, why couldnt I just drill all the way through and then use a bolt instead of the studs? Any reason?

There maybe difficulty with access, not only for inserting the bolts, but also for tightening.

Not sure, but I'm sure there are some very knowledgeable guys on here that will know.

No reason really, make refitting annoying. As the down pipe is in the way of the bottom two. Also drilling into cast iron would be great fun, esp in that tight space.

Fluids of any type is not going to be your saviour here ....this is,the only real solution to seized nuts and bolts. And no propane gas will not be hot enough so dont even bother matey,it must be the Mapp gas OR oxy/act or propane. Get them cherry red and go very slow,too fast and you will hear "snap";)

So after a trip to euro car parts and halfords I armed myself with plusgas and freeze shift (or something or other) from halfords which had good comments on pistonheads. I also bought an impact socket set to use with my 1/2" wrench.

 

Just taken a recess from the rain and have the first bolt almost off!!! Amazed.

 

Took it realy slow and kept stopping to add more of the plusgas and tightening and loosening to give it time to work in. So cool! Thanks for the feedback.

 

Although there are still 5 bolts to go..... sheesh

You may need a 3/8 one for the turbo bolts mate, don't think there's enough room for the 1/2". Might be able to do it with a UJ.

After all, what have you got to loose apart from time.

blow lamp is what you need here there is plenty of room to here you can do it try fitting the 3 inch down pipes talk about no room the stock one are a joy to work on as there is plenty of room. listen to bri used the lamp that will make your day so so so so much better

So all 3 of passenger side are loose now (one off completely) and have left driver side to soak overnight!

 

Stephen bit worried you keep saying the turbo bolts... I was thinking that the decat is only replacing this elbow back pipe, not the turbo down? :s worried now.

I dont have decent lamp available but hopefully this will work out!

I would have though that amount of heat would make the old bolts weak and brittle?

no think of the constant heat from the system really heating them up works wonders i have done this a few times now really is a life saver

I sheared two of the six studs when I swapped my decats. It wasn't that difficult to drill them out and replace them with bolts.

This worked a treat drilling them out, if you get stuck. Can't remember the exact size off the top of my head.
