So I've had this car for a while, but only recently have i had time to do anything to it so i figured I would start another thread for all this car's related work.

It's a 1989 JDM na Auto SWB. When I bought it I thought I would take the parts I needed off it for my TT, but the TT works and I don't really need loads of parts for it so I want to keep this car complete and put back on the road.

It looks like a barn find, but trust me it's not as bad as it looks (hopefully).

  • Hi, I do still have this car and I've got her roadworthy bar some will rust. I haven't really had a need to have this car to drive so it's just been dry stored for a while. Not sure what I'm going to

I was talking to Lee Dent (where the car was sitting at for a while) and he said the car used to belong to a Paul (P)?

Been mostly working on the interior at this time.

Before:

Pretty much every interior panel unscrewed, most of it sitting in the boot.

After:

Driver door card was removed to fit the seatbelt but the bolts are all chewed up. I had to remove the ball-bearing inside the seatbelt that was jamming it. And yes it still locks, not sure of its purpose.

Trip to Keith's gained me some leather seats to replace the tweed seats, but haven't gone in yet.

Pipes etc back in the engine bay and she runs after a battery charge.

She was in limp mode after I put the stock air box in, and I went to check for corrosion on the maf connector and look at the idiot that put the plug on upside down.

The only worry I have is 30 seconds after she turns on, it starts smoking quite heavily

I'm thinking it's going to be head gasket or piston rings... But I'd prefer not to hope for the worst and get a new engine.

Parked next to my white zed there .

It looks to be the basis of a nice little car. Abeit with some work to do.

IMO... dont fit them nasty fibreglass skirts.

And IMO ditch the auto box. They are dire in an NA.

Smoking could just be acumulated oil in the plenum or oil from weeping valve stem seals. If it is that then smoke usually clears after a good run at full temp.

Overall this is just a side project that I'm going to keep mostly stock and not have to worry about being perfect.

I saw that on his facebook, do you know any more about the owner/history than I do?

I hope it will be, it's just something I don't have to worry about, it might be a daily as a stock hp na would be cheaper to insure than a modified TT, but at the moment an MOT for it is the plan.

Supposedly CarMad skirt Ahem... Keith passed them off to me free so I couldn't really refuse and just test fitted them, they aren't over the top or ghastly but I will have to wait until I get wheels on and off jack stands to make a final decision.

I've still got an auto in my TT, that'll be swapped first, anything like that for me is low prioirty. I would agree they are bad, but i'm not going through an expenditure more than the cost of the car to make it feel better when it runs fine.

Possibly, it was running for a good 20-30 minutes, the temperature did get up to temp on the clocks, but then 5 mins later the temp gauge went back to zero so unsure if it works or not. I'll be sure to give it a good run under load before I rush into things.

And I also have to worry about this:

Is that the rear section behind the bumper?

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

Sorry Ali i know the lad who had it before you but it never left lees place during his ownership so i know nothing about its history.

Looks like the rear portion of the sill to me. With the inner and outer rotten. Your going to be cutting a lot out of that before your done kiddo.

Well Keith bought it from Lee's place and had it since March last year, but he did mention the owner just left it at Lee's for a long time.

Yep passenger side sill.

I've been told conflicting information about it, Lee and Keith have said its not disastrous and could be worse, but it looks quite bad to me. I need to cut into it before I make further judgement about it, but yeah inner and outer skin. If its caused by the targa drains then that isn't good news...

Essex? This car is in Wales haha.

I can cut, I only have a stick welder though so it won't suffice. It'll probably end up going to Lees to get fixed, it's very low priority though so thanks for the offer but it's fine for now.

Ahhhh...... maybe not then...... Just saw you are down as South Croydon......... lol

Yeah cars in storage, I only go up there a couple times a year.

I remember the owner before Lee buying it in September 2013, it's been pretty much sitting since then.

So September 2013 to ~March 2015, that's rather a while.

So I went to stockpile parts today since I ran out of room, and I couldn't resist fixing her back up a bit.

1: replacement for handle in

IMG_20161028_152247.jpg

2: rear shock absorbers. These were a bitch to get in on my own, and to take the piss the last top stud sheared off so I will have to do it again...

IMG_20161028_132701.jpg

IMG_20161028_125035.jpg

3: wheel studs on as it only had 2 on the front wheels

(No pics :pinch:)

4: fibreglass nose panel modified to sit better, but it's still an awful fit so I'll probably get a stock nose to replace it with.

5: just for a bit of fun I mocked up the rear spoiler I got off mike. I really like the low level style and alot sharper than my impul spoiler.

Should be roadworthy next summer.

Can somebody tell me if this much rust will fail MOT or is it too vague to tell.

I genuinely have to wonder how someone with no obvious form of income can afford to fix not one but two Zeds...? Boggles my mind!

Where's that rust situated?

Rear sill mate

All these parts being fixed on this car cam off the breaker. The manual conversion I'm funding from the breaker mostly, but even if I don't get all the money back from the breaker at least I'll have a cheap as chips manual conversion and subframe swap, that's worth the money imo.
