Hi - my zed is in the great hands of jimmer at the minute replacing the engine with a doner - the engine is complete with all injectors, turbos, exhaust, nistune ecu and smic. The car was mapped not long back by Noel. I don't have the dyno run for it for the time of mapping so just wanted a power run to give the power output once completed. There is a place in devon that does rolling road tuning and power runs but have not had a good experience there before and don't think they know the zx that well - if I just wanted a power run could they mess this up - don't want them tinkering once jammer has worked on it - long winded I know but are all dyno done the same i.e would garage here follow same procedure and get the same output as another garage - hop this makes some sense

You could stipulate that it's a "power run only" ie no changes made just to see the output. This is fairly common practice. In answer to the question though, no there not all equal. Different brands will be different. Tbh dyno's generally are a bit of a farce.

thanks for the reply - I agree on the farce side of things. I am sadly surrounded by people that believe the bhp is the be all and end all - the car has been away since jan 1st having mods to body work now the engine the first thing I will be asked is the BHP - it was mapped by noel (as previously stated) with an output of 621 I know really it comes down to driveability rather than output but I can here these idiots in my head already.

If you have a new (donor) engine, then I would think that you will need it mapped properly. Asgoing from a setup of 621 on your previous setup, to your current one, it will require some fine tuning surely?

What happened to the engine that was running 621bhp?

Different dynos will vary drastically,.

You need to read this thread fully........

Hi - there was nothing wrong with the engine at all at 621 - it was a project car that someone had all engine work done - full re-build etc previously by Jimmer low miles on that re-build - owner had done the engine first while looking for a better shell to drop into and finally when the shell came along he has moved on and lost interest in the project.

Hi jeff - I had been following your thread and fully understand (I believe) I have not even got the car back or driven it yet so cannot comment on how it drives - originally it was into Jimmer to rebuild and forge the my engine and while out add slight bigger turbos, injectors and engine loom with a target of about 500bhp - only a rough figure that would I thought be achievable and drive well - my remit all the way through is that it has to be smooth running and be good as a daily driver as well - the cost of the original works was comparable with what I have paid for the doner and have been guided that it was a good way to go - I have had the car for 12 years and you have yourself worked on it several times with the ecu upgrade and boost jets which it ran for many years - then uprated clutch - injector fault and timing belt change amongst other things. - I think if it was me that was jumping up and down and insisting on higher and higher bhp then I would fit into your thread but this is what the engine is already running. The car was running about 350bhp and felt quick enough but was always concerned that it was running at max for stock injectors so would like it to run without being maxed out - I suppose for me is that if it does not drive well enough as a daily driver then I can consider reducing power (is that correct) - I suppose for me although I am not that interested in higher bhp I also don't want to come across to peers that I have spent thousands on this project and "Don't know" its output. I suppose sadly every car that is manufactured and spoken about bhp seems to be up there in the statistic that they all declare first (manufacturers included)

Well said Dave like you view on big bhp etc, the engine build is without question having been done by Jimmer so that is all good, fingers crossed the mapping does not kill it in the long term though.

hi jeff

my knowledge of these things are limited (very limited) and I suppose I am now confused - have I still got a potential issue even though its a relatively newly built engine??? as you can see from my history I am not on here an awful lot so I think I have missed something - is there something wrong with the setup or map carried out- would be extremely grateful if you could enlighten me

Do not get worried yet, the build is good, the parts good, just get the map checked out by another, you will be running in anyhow and if you keep the boost under good control till revbit is run in you can get the map checked out then, my point is really more about standard engines mapped to produce silly power and the said mapper squirming out of responsibility when it goes wrong even on rebuilt engines.

ok that's cool thanks for the info jeff - Is noel one that you would not recommend then as you say "have it checked" by someone else

Mate at the end of the day Jimmer knows the build and your spec. Have a chat with him surrounding your options. Your going to need a remap due to the changes made to get the best out the car anyway. Jimmer as the builder is the best person to advise you how things should be proceeded with. Your still running at atm I take it?

thanks for the good advice - will speak to jimmer - sorry Stephen did not get your question on what I am running at present

I don't believe so I believe it was run in then mapped but again will check - really appreciate the advice - many thanks

The engine in question is (I believe) out of Josh Lake's old Zed. When I was down at Powerzed a couple of weeks ago, Jimmer had said that it had been sold as a "turn key" package so, theoretically, this car shouldn't require any dyno work once the new engine's been installed as absolutely everything engine, fuel, ECU and ignition-related will have been transplanted into Roly's car. :)

Hi Mondo - it is indeed josh lakes engine - although no one has a copy of the dyno
