I was after some advice. I've just removed the cats from my 1989 tt manual, because they're blowing. I wondered if these would fit?

It concerned me that the ad states that they won't fit cars with pre cats.

I've always been wary of removing the cats in case it reveals any turbo issues. There is no sign of any oil in the turbo elbows, is this a promising sign?

I would like to think that non turbo downpipes would not fit tts because the pipes come from the turbos not the manifold. But I could be wrong.

It states that they will fit turbo's and non turbo's in the ad. They look similar to what I've removed, but I know that doesn't guarantee anything!

They should be fine mate, as the n/a manifolds have an extra bit where the turbos would be on a tt. Also if you and an oil issue with your turbos on the exhaust side it would show up as blue smoke out of the exhaust whilst running.

Cheers that's put my mind at rest a bit. The other bit they concerned me was the statement that they don't fit cars with pre cats.

Does my car have pre cats?20160519_134930.jpg

Only UK TT cars had a pre cat on the passenger side downpipe, so if yours is a Jap then no worries :thumbup1:

Cheers guys, it is a j spec, so I'll get it ordered. Do I need gaskets where they mate with the turbo elbows? There weren't any on the cats and I'm fairly sure that's how it left the factory.

I just need to buy some cream now, to put on my burns from drilling the studs out!

It may come with gaskets but if not, use some gasket exhaust sealant, most exhaust fitters/garages use the stuff

Cheers. I've already got some assembly paste and I've ordered some gaskets to replace the ones at the rear.

Yes you will need gaskets, the old cats did in fact have seal rings as I have highlighted in your picture, do not use exhaust paste that goes hard like gun gum as the temps are so high it just dry`s out and falls away, use silicon exhaust sealer.

Sadly it's a suck it and see thing. Your cats would of not only masked but prevented oil leaking out due to the increased pressure in the exhaust. The oil will make its way to the area of least resistance, If the exhaust has lower pressure than the oil pan then it's going to leak into the exhaust.

Theoretically, even if your turbo exhaust seal was non existent, if the pressures were correct it still wouldn't leak. With a healthy engine, low blow by, healthy turbos you shouldn't suffer any problems. To reduce risk a properly functioning PCV system will improve your chances.

Cheers Jeff

Shall I just buy flat gaskets like these?

Cheers, that sounds pretty obvious now you've explained it like that. I guess it's time to cross my fingers!

When you fitted them can you let me know how you get on as I'm thinking of getting some as one of my cats is leaking thanks Stephen

Will do. I'm not sure when it will all arrive, so it may not be until next weekend.

That's fine I've still got other bits and pieces to do thanks

They were delivered 14 hours after I ordered them. They are japspeed decats.

They came with all 4 gaskets and nuts and bolts for where they join the exhaust. The ad states no gaskets or fixings, which is annoying because I've just ordered a set.

To fit the passenger side just required the bracket to be bent slightly. The drivers side needed 'coaxing' with a lump hammer and a block of timber to clear the corner of the transmission tunnel.

They are only slightly louder than the cats, which is ideal, because I didn't want the car any louder.

Strange, as I have a Belgian TT and pre-cats on each side.

I would imagine you have cats each side and not the extra precat on the pass downpipe after the turbo, get some pics up :thumbup1:

LHD cars had the space for both pre-cats. RHD cars had the space for a pre-cat on the n/s but without costly

re-engineering could not be made to fit on the o/s. It was the main reason that with ever tightening emissions

regs combined with low sales volumes that Nissan withdrew the cars from sale in the UK in '94.

Thats good to know, i guess we havent had many questions on the European version regarding cats
