Hi all I have a dilemma I have a choice of two oil coolers to put on my z.

One is a setrab 16 row the other is a mocal 10 row

The setrab is a lot narrower but taller then the mocal ...please see pics.... which one will be more efficient?

Can't help with the choice I'm afraid. But I have Setrab and haven't had any issues, not sure if he size but it looks a little wider that your shown

Which one has the largest surface area? The larger surface area it has the more potential it has for thermal exchange.

yep this is how i see it too

One was on my z. The other was bought from a member as a full kit z1 full flow oil cooler. They have both been flushed out thoroughly.

It's compulsory being a rebuilt engine :)

Everything is cleaned !

That's an understatement. I think I would happily eat off most of your car now

Thanks Steven very appreciated buddy. It is a labour of love not to everybody's taste but tbh I don't give a shit hahaha

Clean enough for a BBQ on it eh?

Pretty clean not to most peoples standards but it is to my limited budget

Blimey Gaz - that looks great! You've clearly moved on since the last time I was here!

Hey Steve it's been a while :) . . Hope your keeping well? Yes I have progressed a bit. The club knowledge helps a lot . Very helpful people :)

Cheers dave :) she is getting there slowly.

Still need help with the cooler situation tho hahaha. I'm tempted to go with the mocal. It just looks bigger. It might be a placebo ...

There are only three variables gaz. Surface area, thermal effectively per unit area(think about the fins) and contact time as you cannot standardise the coolant (air) at a stable temp. Ideally you want a large surface area and long contact time(within reason). This would ensure that the oil would be exposed to the coolant property for the maximum effect.

I don't think logically either of those will have very much difference in flow rate. So to that end it's all down to surface area. They appear the same thickness and the fins appear the same density. So if the mocal has the larger "face" logically it's going to be the more efficient cooler.

In reality I doubt between these two you will notice measurable differences. Iirc your using a thermostatic sand which plate for this full flow design so the reality is that you will be far more efficient than the stock pressure based system which not only, only runs when your at 45psi or more of oil, so driving, but also restricts the oil pathway to an 18th of an inch meaning flow rate is exceptionally slow.

Likely if you wish to boost its efficiency a shroud would be most effective, as mounted just causally in the nose, there is no incentive for air to pass through your cooler, the path of least resistance is to shoot past and round it. Something like this;

Obviously this won't help you in static situations, traffic etc but then your not building a car that's expecting to see abuse with low speed, I'm thinking primarly there about drift cars, that would see high RPM and load and low speeds. So I think that would be a great option to you. I'm sure a man of your calibre will be able to implement something along those lines.

Lovely engine bay paint job! Are you keeping the rising sun?

What about core thickness?

That would come into efficentcy per unit area. Lazyness on my part there. Plus they appear to be the same thickness. Lazy.

Il nip round there and get him out of bed, get my ol' measuring stick out and create a closed loop out of it and test the time taken to reduce tempreture on both. And the tempreture gradient across them both. Probably a bit much.

Leave him alone! Just making a point.

BTW - this is the Euro/UK spec oil cooler for comparison:

If I may have any input, the black one looks twice as high, but also half as wide so the difference would be in the thickness, and I think the black one is slightly thicker. Probably best to actually measure them but they should be near enough the same IMO, and also the black looks alot neater

Our Gary isn't one for mornings anyway, haha. I was supposed to get up but I've ended up having a lie in till 7.30 this morning, that sunshine makes me lazy.

Nothing so exotic - just work and family (4 kids now!) :) I'll have to pop over to see you Andrew. Will drop you a text/PM bud..

Yes the rising sun is staying. It attracts attention from a distance at shows. The engine bay was painted by myself. I'm very happy with the result thanks
