Reading through some old threads the other day, I unexpectedly found a previous owner of my zed, so naturally I did a bit of digging! And found out some quite worrying things...

Looks like it had major welding done TWICE (for some reason?!?) In 2012

http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?158835-Loads-of-work-done-Thank-you-Lee-)

http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?162871-Got-the-Old-Girl-back-from-the-bodyshop-)

And I've then got an invoice that it had one of the sills done AGAIN in 2014, AND the other sill has currently got a horrible patch on it so looks like that was done again...

AND it still needs all redoing again now! Including one of the arches.

Needless to say this all has me very worried. I wasn't bothered about having to shell out for the welding, but on the assumption that once it was done I would be good to go for donkeys years. How can it keep going so bad so quickly?!?

Good idea, they're still there but could have become disconnected inside I suppose, will have to check

Looks like the a lot of the previous welding was done to a price most likely set by the customer and not necessary the welder, if you don`t cut out far enough it will come back what ever coatings you put on it !

Yea maybe, the last job I have is for £600 for one rear sill and it's a right bodge, didn't even skim it with filler

When getting repairs like this done, you should ensure the person carrying out the job is familiar with the vehicle and knows what has caused the corrosion, that way a qualified repair is done which should then las as long as the original.

Is that for just welding or for other jobs too?

Just the welding, some local mot place. The welder even burnt the paint on the door above

Oh Jeez, that sort of money should get both sides done correctly, ground back, filled, under sealed and repainted !!

That`s bad, at least you can get it done right now !

Maybe the symptom was repaired without attending the cause.

Well that's what I'm hoping I suppose. Haven't had a chance to check the drain tubes yet, I will do though. I did notice the rear subframe bar that goes to near the rear sill was wet though despite the car not being moved, so my guess is that water is leaking through there from somewhere

Well I wish you were still in business then!

One word for you matey .... Bodymech, If I lived in the UK, I would be going straight to Allan as he has vast experience in repairing and painting these cars. He's done Manta v8's and Hollings cars, just to mention a few. At the very least, you can be assured of a perfect job with a perfect finish. Id say Keith (KJZ32) would also be up to the task also. These are both guys that know their way around these cars, they know what to look for and how to repair them properly. Find out how much to do the job properly and take your time saving up a few quid that it can be sorted once and for all. That's what I'm doing at the moment, putting a few quid aside each payday to get my last few engine bits and a full respray. I was just planning on getting my parts painted and fitted to the original car, but I'd rather wait a bit longer and have it done properly :thumbup1:

I agree, well worth taking an 1hr30min drive down to Jimmer or someone well reliable to get the car fixed up for good. A local welder wouldn't know about the targa drains etc so may cock it up

Well I wish you were still in business then!

My welder / painter still is and working on my old customers cars still.

Yea I was wondering about taking it to him to have a look at. It's a long way, but isn't turbonoz in the same neck of the woods? Would be well worth the trip then :thumbup1:

The drains look fine unfortunately...any other ides what could be causing it?

Jeffs bodyshop did my wide arch conversion 3 years ago and did a cracking job , no issues so far, saying that i havnt checked the drains in a while better get under the old girl and clean them of any debris flush the drain lines through from the targa , make sure what i put in is what i get out...a litre of thin flushing oil fed into the drain line at the targa with a squeezy bottle should give a litre ( slightly less ) in a catch bottle under the drain line, plus it coats the internal line of the drain allowing any water to slide away

Noel turbo noz does re mapping, for engine work Jimmer, body work Alan . there are others as good with a good reputation , do a search on the forum mate

Yes I'm well acquainted with Jimmer :smartass: the others are bloomin' miles away so not as if I can just pop in for a quick chat!
