About a week ago I dropped a friend off in town and when I got to the dual carriageway I accelerated to about 50 and she literally died on me. A couple of splutters but that was it.

I could smell the catalytic, bad sulphur burnt smell. Which eventually went away and she started again.

I eased her the mile I had left and then took her out to test a day or two later.

The same thing happened after 10 minutes of running. She cut out but this time no smell. I left her for about 15 minutes and she started again.

Being that there wasn't much to look at this point. I changed the fuel filter.

Took her out today and she ran well, full power as far as I could tell. She cut out about a mile from home. I probably did 4 miles.

She's cut out but this time will not start.

No lights on the dash to indicate anything out of the ordinary. Everything looks connected under the bonnet.

Suggestions welcome :)

Do you know which version of the PTU you have ?

Had a similar thing when I first got mine...........

As advised pulling codes is the best option first.

have a read of this......

Only an idea....... hopefully one of the specialists may pop in for some advice....

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

Given the probably unburnt fuel in the cats, then it's ignition, and as all cylinders fail then it's almost certainly PTU, could be CAS, but as it starts again when cooler, probably PTU.

Checked today and if I'm right it's showing code 21.

Ignition signal.

Would this prove the PTU theory?

Another source has also suggested the Ptu, so now I need to find a replacement to test.

Thanks for the links and suggestions guys.

Happened to me years and years ago when I first had my Z, was the PTU

Ignore the "post '93" though as no JDM or UKDM cars were supplied with the new PTU from the factory (regardless of the MY, possibly with the exception of MY99?), they were all fitted with the pre '93. Only USDM cars (and probably other hot climate markets) were sold with the newer model. I believe there was also a recall in the US for older models to have theirs replaced. The post '93 part was originally for a Skyline.

My car has had the later one since I got it, although I have no way of knowing that it's original.

Try cleaning and cleaning the contacts on the PTU and CAS before you get too worried.

PTU contacts and unit are very clean. I did give it a quick once over. What is the CAS?
