Ok, had the car on axle stands for a couple of months. Brakes all stripped, cleaned etc and reassembled. Ready to bleed brakes so topped up master cylinder. No1 son didn't appear so left overnight. Following morning theres a puddle of brake fluid on floor directly below Master cylinder. Never had a problem with the brakes before, only worked on the calipers and the flexis were sealed to prevent excessive fluid loss. No work was done on the master cylinder . Puzzled as to why it's decided to drop fluid. Any ideas??

Was the master cylinder left empty ? rear seal may of dried out?easy to check undo the two 12mm nuts and ease forward and look to see if wet behind the cylinder / servo area.

 

Silly question maybe, is your auto or manual, only reason I ask is if it is a manual it could be the slave cylinder leaking not the brakes, long shot but you never know.

Auto Jeff. Master cylinder was never empty. Was careful with that to make bleeding easier. Remove 2 x 12mm nuts and the brake lines. Will the master come right out? How is the master piston connected to the servo?

Ok, if you want to just check the rear of the cylinder there is enough movement in the brake pipes without removing, the master cylinder is not directly connected to the servo, there is a small push rod that comes from the servo and pushes against the cylinder piston, if you decide to remove the cylinder, when refitting you only need to bleed at the abs unit in the boot not the calipers.

Hi Jeff, just had another look and there are signs of leakage between the master and servo so for safetys sake I'll change the seals in the cylinder. Had a look at the links and as usual, very helpful. Thank you.

Got the seals today from Biggred as seen on the link photo. Easy removal and fitting seals. Pain in the butt trying to make sure the threads didnt cross when reconnecting brake pipes but job done, bmc topped up and looking good. Bleed time tomorrow and we should be good to go. Thanks again Jeff.

Nice one,the bleeding should not take long and remember its just at the ABS unit only.

It seems at some stage my car had a similar issue to this, reason I know is because of a massive amount of corrosion around the area where the brake fluid had been on the paintwork inside the engine bay and had also made its way onto the inner arch and corroded the paint underneath the stone chip stuff.. Make sure you clean it all up properly after u've sorted the leak..

Good advice. Had a similar issue with a cortina years ago so Zed has been gunked and blasted. Where's the bleed screw for the ABS?

In the boot on the right under the hump. Let us know if it solves your issue.

There are two bleed screws on top of the unit, does not matter which you do first.

Finally captured son for a wee while. Brakes bled no problem. Wheels on, off the axle stands and tested. Still feels a wee bit soft once engine is running.Solid when engine off. Front brakes bled as calipers were removed. Didn't remove rear calipers as there was no need. Could there be some air in the rear pipes?

i had to call the guy as the part number shown on his site is different from the one I got. The one I just fitted was M1718. It's only the seal kit (4 seals), not the full kit which includes piston etc but the cost was only about £15 and delivery was next day at no extra.
