Silly question really but what marks on the timing belt go where. I guessed that the arrow FR -> means pointing forwards (the way you would drive), but which mark do you start with on the crank?

Cheers...

I'm taking a guess and saying line up the dotted one with the crankshaft so the two of the top ones line up, but not the most left one.

They line up with the marks on the pulleys. You must count the teeth as per the FSM as well. Your engine was a 0BTDC before you started yeah?

Yes, so to confirm the two lines on the belt, should line up on the driver's side, and a line not on any sprocket on the passenger side? And then count the number of teeth between the intake cam sprocket and exhaust sproket

And this is with the dotted line on the crank marker

EDIT: Screw that, when it's tensioned more the drivers side marks don't line up. So can someone tell me which marks go where please

So I believe this is how it goes:

Please someone correct me if the marks are wrong, I will now put it in properly.

Here you go Ali for peace of mind, looking at the pic it looks ok so far, but you need to make sure the crank is correct[emoji106]

Cheers, thanks here's it installed:

Sorry for bothering people, but the search on Tapatalk is horrible so I can't find anything I want

Probably a duff angle in the pic but the crank looks not quite lined up

You're right, it's a few mm off, but I reassured myself as the line is on the dent marking (for all of them) and I read you are supposed to view it from a 15* angle or something. But every line is on the marks, and all the marks line up so I'm happy.

The marks are as a guide. I repeat, count the teeth as per the FSM.

It is, 24 teeth between the intake and exhaust ones.

Everything now in place, I don't think I could have been a tooth off, I've counted them all also so I'm happy

As you say the crank one looks a couple of mm out but I can't see how it could be wrong, it's where the dent is and that's how it started.

Well done so far alic.

Careful u might get a few requests after this:)

Cheers art, it wasn't so difficult after I got past all the bolts that wouldn't come loose, and the broken tools. I feel alot more confident now I've (mostly) completed it

Have u not replaced all the guide pulleys and tensioner? No new water pump?

New water pump coming (courtesy phoenix), didn't really think the tensioner or idle pulley needed replacing :S

Your a fool if you don't.....

Not trying to skimp out, but the pulleys cost excess of £100 together, ATM I can't spend that.

How comes the need replacing, they still spin perfectly fine, is it bearings?

Well they're included in the 60k kit so if you think the cambelt needs doing, surely they need doing as well? If you don't, it could be big trouble in the future.

Did you not just buy a kit?

Welcome to the world of owning a Z32, your not paying labour so just buy the COMPLETE kit and do the job properly mate, it's the ONLY way.

My cambelt was done at 60k, I'm now doing it at 74k

I have to say I agree. The whole point in doing what your doing is future proofing. We all understand your on a budget, pretty much all of us are but doing half the job doesn't do what you set out to do.

Make sure you set the tension and rotate the engine by hand to check you've not made any mistakes.

Yup - top tip from the master there.... Jeff probably holds the world record for the most 300zx cam belt changes.....

From memory - I thought that the belt, thermostat, two little water hoses and water pump should be replaced at 60k; whilst the pulleys would be fine to leave until 120k miles. Naturally, it depends on whether you can rely on the mileage reading.......

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

But we're all the components replaced at 60k? FOR SURE?

I'm not saying it was, not saying it wasn't, just saying by eye they work fine.

I can rely on the mileage reading, its been sat in a garage the best part of 10 years. Waterpump, hoses are both being replaced.

Tbh I'm torn because I have literally £20 ATM which I was going to buy oil with, but he'll that's not even enough for one of the pulleys, yet everyone is emphasising the importance.

I understand you have a budget mate, but I do cam belts every day and I would never not replace any rotating part associated with the belt regardless of how ok they seem.

Save your money and do the job correctly from the start, it pays in the long term :thumbup1:
