This is probably the dumbest question asked but will any transmission or oil fluid leak when I take the starter motor out as the starter is at the bottom?

And to make 100% sure this is what I am removing isn't it? a7ae6385ffb247e3f01574c4d17e1f82.jpg

It's a bit of a bodge, but I undid mine using the starter.. Long

Bar on the crank bolt wedged again the chassis , fuel pump relay out( so it doesn't start), the turned it over with the starter, I'm sure I'll be told off for suggesting it, but it's how I'll be undoing mine tomorrow...

That's exactly what I was going to say. I had visions of the next question. " I can't get the crank bolt undone" while all 50kg of 17 year old hangs off a 30cm long ratchet. That crank bolt is TIGHT, you can't get an impact gun in there, so it's big bar and hope what ever you've done to lock it up holds. Stuff that, when you can do as you say, quick flick and bang it's off lol. It's not redneck Ali it's ingenuity, take it from a redneck.

50kg lol

I'm going to do what I did when I had to get the wheel nuts off... Slot a scafold pipe over the ratchet. Easy.

I'm now indecisive, because obviously I'm worried about burning out the motor or breaking something by using the starter, but it would make my life much easier.

You won't burnout the starter, I use starter motors to load cars on my truck in first gear. There's a lot of power in them!!

How do I then tighten the thing afterwards?

Just to confirm after doing around 1500 zed cambelts, I never once needed to remove the starter to release the crank pulley.

Of course I had access to heavy air tools but way before I picked the air gun up I would try the rubber hammer method, 27mm socket on the pulley bolt, a strong ratchet handle, and now you basically support the ratchet and use the rubber hammer to crack the bolt, this can take several hits but most of the time this will be enough.

If not the starter motor method is your friend, by the time you are ready to undo the pulley bolt the cas unit will be unplugged so no danger, set a breaker bar or similar against the floor or chassis rail dependant on the breaker bar length with the same 27mm socket on the pulley bolt, as the engine will turn clockwise as you look at it the bar need to be set it to hold the bolt so it will undo.

Now flick the starter, not a full turn a flick, usually a couple of flicks will do it, the amount of torque the starter has is massive and with the quick flick will release the bolt.

Ok there is the odd one that has rusted on and air tools can be the only answer or the starter motor removal, but never had to do that.

Note: To tighten the bolt up when refitted, the rubber hammer will be absolutely fine.

Enjoy the job, always good to get to know our car, take it slowly and take pictures, always nice for your service history.

This guy is an absolute God.

Quick snap the bolt comes off easy, bit of muscle and the pulley came off, now staring at the timing belt.

Not to mention everything he's helping me out with behind the scenes.

Thanks so much Ash, saved me about an hour, made the club subscription worth it any day of the week.

Hi guys I used this method to release the crank pulley bolt so I didn’t have to remove my starter motor. Worked great. Now I’ve done the timing belt I want to tighten the pulley bolt back up to the correct torque but my brain has stopped working and I can’t figure out how to do it. If it was a manual I’d put it in gear to stop the engine moving but it’s an auto so the only thing I can think to do is take the starter motor off and jam a gear. Any thoughts so I can carry on being lazy?

There are many different methods, I clamp the old air con belt with some large grips, you can look up the belt locking method on the net.

Thanks, I used some spring compressors on the old air con and power steer belts and it worked a treat :)
