Hi all,

My 93 N/A seems to have developed a problem. Since starting it yesterday (frosty morning) it has been unable to pass 2500rpm. It seems to chug and vibrate when the revs meet this point, I was able to drive it until the car heated up and then the problem seemed to have resolved. The same happened this morning. Car starts on the money every time.

Before this the car has been bulletproof!

Has anybody encountered this issue before or know what it could be related to? I shall be getting it looked at on Monday

Hi, I'm no expert but I agree it may be a MAF error and it's in limp mode.

Likely some water/condensation on the filament on the maf attracted to the dust or grime on the filament. Give it a clean, air duster or squirt of contact cleaner and let it dry.

A faulty MAF does indeed limit the revs to 2500k, but try cleaning it first as it sounds like when its warm it resolves itself.

I would advise firstly to pull any codes off, if the MAF was going wrong it would liekly tell you.

Out of interest buddy, where do you live? I'm not about this weekend however I will be next. If the problem continues give me a shout.

As above, sounds like a MAF related issue, I have spares should you need to borrow one for diagnosis.

Thanks all.

Sounds pretty promising that you're all going down similar lines.

I'll try and see what I can do, I've got it booked in somewhere nearby, the guy mentioned on the phone the fault could take some searching for, mention coil pencils.

If the issue were the MAF would it be a pricey problem?

I live near Lowestoft in the east of England. That would be awesome if you're nearby.

Just an update; drove the car home this evening (warmer evening) and it was totally fine.

Thanks all.

Just a word of warning mate. If the garage hasn't worked on a Zed before, you could end up paying whilst the mechanic 'chases rainbows'.

Keep us posted with how you get on.

There's plenty of help on here.

I have had that fear.

Would anybody be able to recommend a garage for these motors near Lowestoft?

Alternatively, I could go in and ask them to check the MAF and rectify if necessary.

Speak to 'ted' as he lives that way I believe............??

He may know a good garage round there.....

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

Just to add to the offers of help, I am working in hemsby on Monday, you're welcome to borrow a good maf if you can meet me?

Yea, I'm Beccles.

The car seems absolutely fine now, I'll still get it seen however.

Ah I am free Monday afternoon. I wouldn't know the first thing to do unfortunately, would you?

Would be ace if you were able to help!

I would try and pull the codes, because if it is the MAF it should pull a code.

Guide:

Even better is if someone has the conzult setup to diagnose exactly the problem.

Afternoons no good, I'll be finished in hemsby about 10 or 11, then got to go to Peterborough. I can meet up in between if it's any help.

I have the little one in the morning while the missus sleeps from a night shift so no can do :-(

I have watched a little vid on cleaning the mass air flow cleaner, and changing the filter. I have bought a bottle of cleaner, may give that a whirl and see

I didn't quite understand how to interpret the flashing, I take it the numbers don't appear above the lights, is it the number of flashes?

There should be a led on the side of the ecu ( although one of my ecu's doesn't have one), under the wooden plate in the passenger footwell. It is this that flashes.

In the video i posted, it connects two wires in the conzult port and flashes the check engine light, but you can also turn a screw on the ECU to get codes that way. Best to ask Jeff or the likes for specifics :)

If you guys say its 100% the maf, then it might not be worth it, just its just a free way to gain a better understanding of whats going on, save yourself paying a mechanic to diagnose :P

Number of long flashes for the first number, and number of short flashes for the second number.

Ran that and it's the MAF! Flashed up clearly as that.

Thanks guys! Owe you all one

I'm confident I can sort the issue now, glad it wasn't anything severe. Parts ordered, awaiting delivery!

Good job, saved yourself a trip to the garage!

It may be too late, but be aware the Chinese "knock-off" maf's can be known too be faulty/problematic. Well done for sorting it though!

yep they are very bad - I would only ever get a used MAF if I replaced mine again as I tried an "OEM" chinese one and it made the car undrivable on boost.

Well I bought the cleaner online last night. Was gonna head to a halfords or a car parts store for the air filter, there was too much choice online!

Can't wait to get it sorted ready to enjoy the nicer weather!
