The problem I have:-

I manage a few miles and then lose 1,2,3,D and R....... turn her off...... wait 2 or 3 minutes, start and get another 10 yards or so and then repeat process to limp home..... 100 yards at a time!

Seems to be correct fluid level on dipstick....

I haven't touched her in months for my own Sanity and fear of Divorce....... I needed to take a step back and read up....... lol

I have finally got enough time in leu to book wednesday off work..... as long as it isn't peeing it down or blowing a gale outside still...... (Wife at work, kids at school)

I am going to warm her up and try to test the transmission again and see if she throws up any codes.

If not then get her fluid drained and drop the pan again to check the filter seal?

I keep trying to find out what could cause the problem I have of loss of any drive when she warms up, but returns when you let the fluid settle for a couple of minutes..... then drive temporarily returns!

I keep thinking loss of line pressure due to o'ring not sealing on the filter?

Lack of fluid,

Blockage in system

or

Failing electronics??

If it was the clutch packs, surely it would just slip all the time hot or cold?

And not in all gears?

Only other thing I thought was unlucky and have 2 dodgy torque converters??

I can't find anything on the net with this same problem where drive returns....... What am I missing?

I now have the full manual for the auto transmission, a full breakdown of parts used and suppliers of the parts....... just need to learn how it works, find what is causing the problem and fix it...... lol

I now have a full rebuild kit for the transmission with new clutch kit including the steels. I also picked up the transgo kit to increase the line pressure that will hopefully help over standard automatic transmission.

This is a long term rebuild project and I will be doing a diary with photos as I go to help me remember what went where and try to help anyone else mad enough to try this......

I just need to clear out a nice area to clean so the rebuild is in a clean and spotless environment to stop any chance of debris ruining the process.

I have the parts, a parts cleaner & the rebuild / service manual for the transmission and will be starting in the next week or so............

Good luck Russ.

Looking forward to your diary with interest.

I hope to one day strip my gearbox, albeit a manual, but your journey may give me the inspiration I need to attempt it.

Well today I went out to the tip I call a garage....... and did some investigation as to why the first transmission failed on me....

1) I removed the valve body and found a few pieces of broken plastic ring floating about in there...... I think it is the washer from Stator To Reverse Drum.

2) I tested all 5 solenoids and found the lockup solenoid works, the EPC solenoid works, but the pack of 3 are all jammed up and not working...... so I have no overrun, or shift solenoids working...

So far the valve body is really dirty, the gasket is brittle and there appears to be some rust on the outside of the drums......

I will be taking some pictures to add to my posts showing what I find as I go....

Next thing is to make up an angle iron frame to bolt the transmission to my engine stand so it sits vertically and will pivot to work on the valve body, clutch packs, etc...

I shall be slowly rebuilding this transmission as I get the parts to totally overhaul it properly and clean every single part carefully..... I want to know exactly how it all works, comes apart and goes back together so it actually works...

Slowly, cleanly.........

Thought you'd just bought a new one? Is this just for research/spare purposes?

Thought you'd just bought a new one? Is this just for research/spare purposes?

It is Chris.... Nobody seems to like working on them and Nobody wants to help...... So doing lots of research, watching videos and asking questions...

I am hoping to build a good spare transmission and gain some experience in something I have never worked on. No rush.... so enjoying some garage time under no pressure of deadlines.... lol

If I can refurbish one properly, then hopefully I can use this new knowledge to refurbish some more......

RIGHT..... I've hit a snag..... and searched everywhere and can't find any info!!!

HELP please.......

I found on a few sites you need to change the speed sensor on the TT auto box as it puts the speedo out due to my car having an NA rear diff......

I went to swap my NA sensor into the TT box and found it is too big to fit in the hole.....

Does anyone have any knowledge of this or how to proceed please???

Thank you so much for that Andrew..... I tried searching using so many different searches and found nothing..... typical....

Now at least I can Fabricate something to work.....

Well I got 30 minutes to fabricate / macgyver something to clamp the TT speed sensor about 225 degrees clockwise.

I swapped the plastic gear on the end for the bigger NA one.

I read it should be 180 degree, but turns freely upto 270 degree. At 180 it feels as if the gear isn't engaged properly, so went for how it felt rotating between 180 and tight at 270....

I used an old scooter clamp from my sons broken stunt scooter as it was perfect at 32mm ID.

I then marked the old screw hole on it and drilled a hole for an socket bolt.

nice snug fit, no movement.... Perfect...

This way I can loosen and adjust the sensor easily...

This is thanks to Andrew's help earlier today.... Thanks again!

Well, I picked up the Prop from Dave... Tomomontana on Wednesday...... well I say picked up..... Dave helped me jack up his breaker and remove the exhaust and Prop.... took us a while after chatting Z's for quite a while.... lol

So next job is removing the NA prop from my Z, building a franken Prop and then getting it balanced properly with a new centre bearing......

Thanks to Dave for all his help and patience....... And Yorkshire Tea.... lol

Need to get cracking with this now.....

You're a good guy Russ, I'm sure there's Zedders local to you that could lend a hand??

I reckon you could swap it in a day easy. Once you've done it it's alot less daunting.

I've now swapped 2 auto boxes in the past 2 years...... I just don't want to do it on my driveway again...... so looking for a local professional mechanic with Z experience, a ramp and who is willing to do the work.......????????

I don't suppose anyone can remind me which hard pipe on the automatic transmission is the cooler inlet and which is the outlet?

Can't find any information anywhere about which is which apart from one site that says drivers and passengers...... but not sure if it is LHD or RHD..... lol

It would be really nice to see you again Andrew......

Just a quick update...... I was looking at changing the filter in the remote Transmission filter setup and found I made a huge mistake when fitting it!

I fitted it with the Transmission outlet going to the cooler and then from the cooler into the outlet pipe of the filter, then the inlet going to the Transmission inlet....

So I am guessing the filter has a one way valve and would have stopped the fluid flowing through the cooler.............. DOH!!!!!!

I think I stupidly assumed the filter middle pipe was the inlet and got the transmission inlet and outlet mixed up!!

Thanks to Andrew pointing me in the right direction for in and outlet sides, I have now rectified my brain fart!!!!

I am currently waiting for the new WIX filter to arrive and to flush the lines prior to firing her up and testing if she survived!!!

I have no idea why I didn't spot this when I fitted it all....... I can only think it was because I was laying on my back looking up.....:whistling::whistling:

LOL...common mistake mate made by many...when parts are handed i always work under with my head in 1st from the front on my back looking up, keeps the rights right and the lefts left when fitting parts from underneath if that makes sense:lol:
