I just wanted to know if it's normal for the turbo's to whistle/howl. I saw on another forum that someone thought it was a sign of the turbos going.

Thanks

Try to pinpoint the sound..it might be a vacuum leak.

...but if the whistling/howling/screeching sound is coming from the turbo(s) area

it's probably bad news and usually a sign of turbo's that are about to die frown.gif

Vijay,

May not be relevant but as far as I know a turbo is a turbo and I had one on my 200SX which howled, Cool I thought but I didn't know any better... frown.gif

About 2 months after getting it the howl changed to a grind after a popping/grinding noise and some smoke, well lots of smoke...

..So my advise would be yes they probably are on thier way out, But what do I know i'm not a mechanic... wink.gif

Hope they aren't dying on you!

Vijay,

Check there hasn't been a aftermarket turbo guage fitted - and taken off badly.

My car whisled, banged & poped all the time.

Untill I found some rouge vacume pipes as Lymon says - Andy Duff solved all my bits at the MK meet in April.

Theres also was a big power increase when its running right.

Look at all your pipes & make sure a previous owner hasn't buggerd about with what he don't know ! ! !

Mail Andy if you find a sus loose end.

Hope its only a hick up not a f**K up.

harve.

This is my take on the situation.

On a Stock Z with stock Turbos the Turbos should not whistle or howl you just get a kinda nice thursty for lack of a more technical word noise.

Whistling is caused in general by damaged turbine wheel fins more often than not on the cold side. The air gets whipped of imperfections which causes turbulance which = whistling. A result of this will be the Turbos run hotter and generate less usable hp of boost.

The above is only true on Stock Z's - i have driven cars in the past with loud turbos from the forecourt. Volvo's renaults etc all have whistly turbos.

Haven't you just had them changed ? i would ask abuot it where did the work for you - if you are still concerned take it around - As Lymon said it could well be a leak in the wastegate system - check the two coming up from the wastegate actuators for cracks or loose fittings .

I've had numerous Turbo cars, Saab, Toyota etc. All whistled at some point in time, been in R5GT Turbos, they do it, not always a definitive sign that your Turbo(s) are going West!

Best to get it checked out though, as other people have said, could be pipes etc.
