Have posted this topic 6 months ago but am looking for feedback from veteran/specialist Z owners as I have finally decided to repair or do the conversion.

Car wont drop from 2nd to third gear. took it to local mechanic who seemed baffled. Can anyone pinpoint the problem for me . Is it a known problem on Zeds. Its a 94 SWB TT Slicktop. 45 K miles.

Gearbox flush done no diagnostic faults from auto gearbox or ecu diagnostic. The 194 page Automatic transmission section of the Z online manual in only confusing me more

Any help appreciated.

If the gearbox is otherwise fine then it might be electrical. Do you have a HKS ALC ? If so, then if the 10mm bolt on the connector from the ALC to the auto ECU is REALLY sensitive to being done up correctly and trying to loosen or tighten it a turn or two could help.

I guess the same may apply to that connector, even if you don't have an ALC.

Worth a play probably.

I can only suggest taking it to a really good autobox specialist, with good diagnostic checking equipment and experienced mechs.

They should do a complete pin test on the ecu in/outputs and if thats ok, check operation of clutches/solenoids.

I had selection problems when I first got my car, turned out to be a broken wire ffrom ecu to gearbox.

Still cost £300 to find it though, but this also included check of internals and flush etc.

Tim had this problem, you know what he did?

Took off the battery for a few hours,It works fine now;)

Yep Iain's right! DON'T go for the gearbox is shagged routine just yet my friend.

My box was rebuilt a short while back, yeah I've covered some miles since then, but I reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery and it sorted itself out.

ChrisC had this problem aswell after a serious dognut session and his eventually sorted itself out.

Fingers crossed for ya matey.

Unfortunately this battery reset routine didnt work.

Funny thig about this is it happened back in march . I stopped turned off the ignition waited 10 mins started and she drove away fine for 3 months until june. I t happened again and she's been parked since.

This suggest its something minor as a shagged box would not come and go like that.

Unfortunatly Here in Cork When 99.9% of the cars are manual there are no Auto Box repair services. Only other option is hire a transporter and bring to Dublin to a specialist but its like giving one of these guys a blank cheque.

Had the same happen to mine after having a replacement box fitted. Turned out to be a bad earth on the electrical harness to the gearbox????? Might be worth giving John a ring @ Park Garage 01202 528300. Sorry to sound racist, cause i'm not, he's Irish and may be able to help you with contacts over there.

Steve
